Pek Mi Biography:
CTN comedian Chem Chan Dara, better known as Pek Mi, says  his life hasn't always been fame and fortune.
Born into a poor family, he spent most of his youth going to school or foraging for food.

"I was too young to work so me and my brother, Neay Kroeun, searched for frogs, fish, and snails to help feed the family," he told Cambodia Express News (CEN), an affiliate of The Cambodia Herald. "I was always curious and friendly."

Pek Mi never finished school, dropping out during the 9th grade. In 1997, he became a monk at the Sovan Rainsey temple. He left after three years because his family was so poor and needed his help.

Afterwards "I worked as a construction worker in Phnom Penh for almost ten years, and was able to earn 6,500 riel a day," he said. "I had to watch my spending so I could send money back to my family, which was around 70,000 to 80,000 riel."

During this time, he tried out for a TV9 contest, but failed to qualify. In 2009 he received his big break during tryouts for a CTN comedy contest.

"I still worked as construction worker during this time," he said. "That stopped only when I knew that I had made it as a comedian.

"I never thought I could succeed because I didn't know anyone in the industry," he said. "But after the first round, I felt more confident and if I pushed harder I could win."

"In the fifth and final round of the contest, I performed as Pek Mi the worker, the ghost, the alcoholic, and the thief," he said. "The name has stuck ever since."

Pek Mi said even though he had very little experience, he became famous based on three factors: flexibility, good management, and hard work.

"Without CTN, my natural abilities and hard work, I wouldn't be where I am today," he said. "Ever since I became famous, my family has been able to have a better life.
"I'm also helping my siblings venture into the the entertainment industry."

Pek Mi was born in 1982 in Cham commune, Kampong Trabek district Prey Veng Province as the eldest of seven children.
