The wide world of electronic productions and experiments often feature more than a few broken rules in service of unique melodies and rhythms, but a few especially audacious producer-DJs have a fondness for breaking every rule in the book. Pushing waves of criss-crossed genres and impulsive blends from behind the decks, Philadelphia's Inspect3r has made a veritable career out of illicit combinations, bootlegs, flips, and outrageous mid-set selections. Lo.cate 005: Alex Unger (Live at the Brunch Box)

Ever since making the first family jazz mix in 2020, I knew I’d want to put together another to showcase more of my family’s music in this way. So when I got asked to play a family jazz set as part of the Tipper & Friends takeover at Secret Dreams festival this year, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to do so.

This project felt like a collage to me - spent a lot of time gathering old recordings from family members, piecing together with electronic tracks, and doing new recordings on top of that. It would not be possible without all the musicians and producers whose music I featured in this curation so be sure to see the full track list below. Special shoutouts to my dad Paul Barbato, Uncle Joe “Sonny” Barbato, Uncle Artie Barbato, and family friend Bill Jones for doing many recording sessions with me and making this set extra special.

Lots of love was put into this mix and I do hope you enjoy. As I said after making the first one, I am grateful for having a family that taught me music as one of the greatest pleasures in life, and I hope that this helps keep the vibrant genre of jazz alive and celebrated.

Entangled Family Jazz Vol. 2

Live in Cappadocia, Turkey, October 2022. 

This set was recorded on a hot air balloon over 3000ft in the air for a 20 person dance floor. WOW. Absolute peak life moment! This is the maximum height that balloons are allowed to fly. The views were completely otherworldly from up there. This was also one of the first DJ sets of its kind, with a generator powering a full PA sound system in the basket.

Moments like these remind me how magical life can be if you find an outlet for your artistry. 

Huge thanks to Chelsea and Oren at the Exquisite Artist Retreat for making dreams a reality. It was beyond amazing!
