There's something oddly relaxing about the first two-thirds of this track - like rain falling on a toaster while someone repairs an android in a workshop out back. Why that should be relaxing, I don't know, but I like it. If I get my netlabel sorted out later this year, I'd love to put this out!

:: statement ::

random coil came over (no small feat) with the phenomenal RECORDING DEVICE, with which we made recordings of my original issue SONY PS-T22 AUTOMATIC/DIRECT DRIVE STEREO TURNTABLE SYSTEM (just to fulfill the nerd random information act we seem to have instituted for this Junto).

we spent a few minutes making one uninterrupted recording of various forms of misusing the various components of my original issue SONY PS-T22 AUTOMATIC/DIRECT DRIVE STEREO TURNTABLE SYSTEM with a non-standard-issue additional doohickey aparatus that brushes the vinyl clean 42 arcseconds before the needle hits the record (<- i have always enjoyed saying that out loud, very much. needle hits the record, i mean).

@random-coil then spent considerably, but not absurdly, more time cleaning and cutting up that recording, which resulted in 42 samples of varying length.

we then fed these into my supercollider.sf.net setup and proceeded to spend absurd, with-sound-nerd-abandon-grade amounts of time listening to endless semi-random variations of treatments of these. 

the recording i have now, semi-randomly, chosen to upload consists of vanilla, twice-a-second replays of jeweils (*) one of The 42, then segues into relatively chill rhythmic granulations of up to 32 randomly chosen samples. toward the end, the vanillas fade out, and we are left only with the granulations. (the point is pretty obvious in the waveform, i now see.)

this jam was very gratifying not least because random coil had the same problem i always do: all of these sounds sound so delicious, can't decide, can't deCIDE, CAN'T DECIDE. Consequently, we have several hours more of these, if anyone would be interested in putting out an album or two.

Disquiet Junto Project 0033: Turntable Played 

This week’s project is the Disquiet Junto's 33rd, and since the number 33 (or, more specifically, the number 33 1/3) is so closely tied with the LP turntable, that device will be the primary object of investigation. 

You will make an original piece of music in which all the sounds are derived from a turntable — only from the turntable itself, which means you can't put any vinyl on it. You can knock on the turntable, blow on the needle, record the sound of its internal mechanisms, whatever you like. You can also transform those sounds as you please, but you cannot include any additional sounds. 

Deadline: Monday, August 20, at 11:59pm wherever you are.

(*) jeweils is a useful german word that has no direct correspondent in the english language, whose meaning hence is impossible to explain adequately, afaik. in the above sentence, it elegantly points out that we are randomly selecting one of the 42 samples every 0.5 seconds.
