 Franz Kafka worked as a lawyer for an insurance firm in Prague at the turn of the 20th century. His writing brought him little recognition in his lifetime, but he kept at it- until his death from tuberculosis at age 40. In his will, he asked his friend Max Brod to burn all of his unpublished work.
Brod refused- and now Kafka is regarded as one of the most important figures in modern literature.
What’s always fascinated me most about Kafka, though, isn’t just his story—it’s the writing itself: dreamlike, elusive, and strangely intimate, as if pulled straight from the subconscious. His style has been imitated endlessly, yet his voice remains singular, unmatched amid the rest. 
Though his writing often defies logic and convention- and was largely overlooked in his time- it now resonates deeply with so many, including me, over a century later, on a faraway continent in an entirely different world.
