Lucky number 13 is here! While waiting for a couple lovely mixes to come in to get the timing just right for certain label-related milestones, I figured I'd get some tunes I really love together and whip up a new mix for my peoples. Generally speaking, I like to focus my podcasts on an interesting listening experience, and maybe not so much on the "desk rave". But I thought it would be nice to make my little lovelies dance in their chairs a bit this time. You know... to put some bump in that office dwellin' rump.

This is an unreleased track that was sort of part of my 2008 release on Nightlight Music, called "Hell's Bells". The EP was basically made up of three tracks centered around bell sounds. So here we are, over 5 years later and it still sounds pretty lovely. An emotive bit of very deep techy house... or whatever you want to call it. 

This was previously only distributed to people who attended the Nightlight Music residency at San Francisco's legendary 222 club. Now I hope you enjoy the free download and please share it as you like. Just another gift for my friends and fans for the holidays!

Born and raised in LA, musically seasoned in San Francisco, and now residing in Berlin, Byallo’s DJ career took him all over the world, and through a steady education of electronic music genres.

Since retiring from the nightlife, Byallo now devotes all of his musical energy into perfecting his production and mixing skills, immersing himself in analog synths and releasing jazz-infused house and broken beat from his home studio, dubbed The Secret Button. All the tunes coming out of the room are strictly self-released on his own Full Bleed label, and reflect his obsessive levels of attention to detail and quality.

“Fill Light Shine” showcases two of the finest and most sophisticated tracks in Byallo's decades-strong discography. Drawing inspiration from all his influences throughout the years, he pays a deeper tribute to the genre that ignited his passion for music: Jazz. The EP features lush Rhodes chords, melodic Wurli licks, and an abundance of Moog sounds, taking the listener on a soulful and energetic journey. The tracks, "Karma Beach" and "Reflect, Rotate", are highly personal, with the former being inspired by a secluded strip of coastline in Zadar where Byallo found peace and the latter being a tribute to overcoming his own challenges of repeating self-defeating patterns.

Bump it on the sound system, on the airwaves, in the club, in your headphones, this transcendent EP is a peak in Alland Byallo’s artistic career and an epic document of his musical journey.

Engrams refers to the hypothetical, physical interpretation of memories and all that leads up to them. The original tracks "Yuki" and "How Do I Miss You If You Never Go Away" were started in 2005 and 2009, respectively. During a late night listening session, Byallo and Scott rediscovered these cuts and decided it 's time to polish things up and unleash them. All of the tracks here are like slivers of memories, times and places past, reinterpreted and reworked through a filter, as it were, since Kenneth's move to Berlin last year. Allowing the new
influences of the city to permeate and push forward, Scott revives these memories and turns to making new ones. 

Tom Ellis is a long-time favorite of ours, and his treatment of "I Didn't Mean To" is the perfect example of why. Ellis takes the pitched, trippy vocals of our dear friend Linda Line and the basic melody, and adds a distinct, mature and beautifully jazzy backbone to the cut. Nothing short of brilliant.

We've hit a serious heatwave here in Berlin. All I want to do is light one up, drink one down, throw some flesh on the grill and KICK IT to some reggae and dub. That's why I'm so excited about this new podcast! 

Rob Paine… what can I say? I first heard of the man in the early 2000's, while I was working at Doc Martin's WAX Records. The Philly-based DJ/producer's dub-minded take on House Music really hit me hard, and helped influence a generation of West Coast house fanatics. From his work as Solomonic Sound, such as the hit jam "Children of Israel" which I picked up on a white label back in the day, to his output on Grayhound and his own Worship Recordings, this man's sound has been a huge influence on me and many others. Now the guy's working hard on new productions, the Worship imprint and collaborations with cats like Someone Else.

Rob Paine’s roots run deep. From the moment he heard the deep dubby sounds of Reggae as just a youth he knew he had found his sound. His love for the heavy Reggae sounds grew into a forward movement and soon took on a life of it’s own by using the foundation of reggae music as his center piece for all his house & deep techno productions. In 1993 Rob began DJ’ing and throwing events with his crew, “Circle Productions”, who were responsible for the most popular parties and weekly club nights in Philadelphia throughout the 90’s. During this time Rob started producing a broad range of reggae and reggae influenced music including house, deep techno, broken beat, dub, and down-tempo. His unique sounds were soon being released on labels like Large, Tango, Shaboom & Greyhound just to name a few. Following the success of those tracks, his music was licensed to labels like Bedrock, Fabric & NRK. In 1998 Rob formed his own world-renowned imprint, Worship Recordings.

Over the years Rob has performed at some of the most exclusive clubs and events in locations like Canada, Mexico, Jamaica and London. He has played the infamous Fabric, PS1 in NYC, and Francois K’s Deep Space event. He has held monthly residencies in San Francisco, weeklies in South Beach Miami, performed year after year at the Shambhala & Soundwave festivals in BC, and is currently holding down residencies in DC and Philadelphia. 

Rob produces the majority of the projects released on Worship. In 1999 he was awarded the ‘Most Innovative Producer’ by the Philadelphia City Paper. His ‘dub house’ style of production marked him as a forward thinker, blazing the path for future infusions of dub and house sounds for years to come.
He recently released ‘What You See’ EP on Matt Tolfrey’s LeftRoom Records under the name Circle with partner Keith Landis & Gerhardt Koerner (Rise 8) that is doing extremely well. Being selected by Maceo Plex for recent mix compilation. You will see a lot more releases from Circle and Rob Paine’s other projects including a full length Rise 8 album and a EP on i Records.

Rob Paine is an innovator, visionary & one of the cities most prolific DJ’s, producers & musicians. He continually pushes the elements of dub into house and techno music. He has created a world renowned studio & sound system with his full commitment to the city of Philadelphia’s ever continuing music mecca. His talent shines furiously every time he performs whether it is House or Reggae or somewhere in between. Rob Paine does not disappoint. Pure quality every time.

Tracy Chapman - Mountains O  Things (Secret Button Bureau Broke Ass Edit)

Emerging from somewhere in between light and darkness, Jamaica forges her vision of techno duality, hammering out deep stormy rhythms that reinforce a gentle story of poly phonies. Originally from Northern California, Jamaica’s electronic experience became her identity while exploring sounds of the San Francisco underground. Years prior she immersed herself into bands playing bass guitar in various genres, from jazz to psychedelic rock. Shortly after graduating from audio school Jamaica took a haphazard trip to Berlin that finally changed it all. The rest is history; since living in Berlin for the past 3 years she has built a professional recording studio where she spends most of her time carving away at her ever evolving sound. Up next stay tuned for Jamaica Suk's next Solo EP release on Face to Face Recordings in November 2015 and a vinyl only release on L.A.G. in December 2015.

Detroit Grand Pubahs - Sandwiches (Secret Button Bureau Bootie)

San Francisco's Safeword (Marc Smith and Clint Stewart) have been on a tear since forming last year in San Francisco. Right off the bat they've hit a stride with releases on fine labels such as Dessous, Paso Music and are currently remixing for the mighty Mobilee. This, their debut EP on Bad Animal titled "West Portal," weaves down more soulful yet dark avenues. Deep vibes, smooth synths and silky vocals are perfectly accompanied by heavy, churning rhythms and reflections of acid house. 

The legendary Smash TV lend their expertise to round off the EP with an acid house monster of a party jam. While still retaining the dusty soul of the original material, the duo has brought their Midas touch to Bad Animal with this golden rework. Massive stuff!

This was recorded at a [KONTROL] underground event in San Francisco, 2006. The Modeselektor boys made exclusive East Bay hip hop bootleg edits just for this show, as they were totally enthralled by this sound they had never heard until we booked them at another [KONTROL] show earlier that year.

This underground event was, by far, the most fun underground event I've ever been to, and I'm so happy we put it together. The room was so packed that you couldn't help but "grind" the people to every side of you, and thus the crowd became this sweaty, pulsating organism that went apeshit to every sound that came out the speakers. We had to repair a few walls the next day.

I was first exposed to Hideo Kobayashi when he spent some time in San Francisco in the early 2000's. His sets were a fine blend of the most proper Deep House and Techno, and his attention to classic vibes and future sounds really grabbed my attention. That has not stopped since then.

One of Japan’s most prolific electronic music producer and DJ around now, his versatile musical prose is now a welcomed item in the world’s dance music scene. His releases of modern deep house and also floor-smashing techno under his own name, his collaborative production of top notch, tech-house with Ibadan’s Jerome Syndenham as Nagano Kitchen and regular DJ appearances at some of the coolest clubs around the globe, Hideo Kobayashi is a no holds bar, proficient, electronic samurai extraordinaire.

Kobayashi has been banging away lately, focusing on his techno roots, and blowing minds with every single release, remix and collaboration. It's a HUGE honor having him grace the Bad Animal podcast, and I know that you will love this session of Animal Crackers as much as I do!

Animal Crackers Vol. 12 - Hideo Kobayashi

Hi, I'm Alland and I like making and collecting music. I was born and raised in LA, moved to SF in 2003 where my friends and I hosted a big, fancy, well-known techno party at a legendary club called The Endup.

After seven wild years in the Bay I moved to Berlin and some fun stuff happened. Got an album out on Third Ear Recordings, some singles and EPs on Room With A View, Dirt Crew, Poker Flat, Rawax, Housewax and some other nice labels. Had a couple residencies in clubs and radio stations. A couple of my best mates and I started a band project called KAMM, and together we released two albums. The first came out on Marcel Vogel's fine Intimate Friends label, and the sophomore LP on France's legendary Circus Company. See? Fun stuff happened!

These days I spend most of my time in my nice little home studio, I'm the Art Director at Beatport, have my own indie label called Full Bleed Sound, I buy synths I can't afford and I'd most likely like to pet your dog.
