yet is a slippery word in English. Amorphous, these three letters in different contexts can define contrast or emphasis, set a place in time, show an expectation that something will occur or, paradoxically, that it is likely to stop. 

It is this mercurial nature that makes yet the perfect title for Tresor's latest compilation: the label follows on from the more explorative sections of 2021's landmark Tresor 30 boxed set with a compilation, featuring 13 artists making music that resists easy definition. 

Every track hints at and borrows from the familiar yet none follow the expected path: halfway through Deserto, Nandele &amp; A-Tweed dramatically reveal a very different sonic landscape that was initially suggested; DJ Sotofett collaborates with Sri Lankan artist Kavadi with results that are unlike anything in the Norwegian producer's catalogue as yet. 

Further invention can be found as Jean Redondo's Hypersonic moves across spaces inhabited by digital hardcore and hyperpop before swerving off-road and into a futuristic hip-hop section; on No Longer Human, Ireen Amnes takes a different path at the crossroads melding hyperpop, trance, and sci-fi soundtrack atmospherics, Significant Other heads towards UK Bass and Dubstep, and France's Willis Anne skims by the outskirts of footwork with a piece that is almost completely uncategorisable.

Yet more sonic experimentation comes from E-Saggila, Nadia Struiwigh, NVST, Solid Blake, and Viikatory who offer unique takes on the well-established electro blueprint, while Ryan James Ford, and Nit. both find ways to blend elements normally found in ambient pieces with those heard on a dancefloor.

The feel of the compilation is yet again reflected in the enigmatic artwork by Malik Arbab, where shapes and colours suggest animals and plants but in a world that appears to be transient and constantly evolving.

Ryan James Ford - Totes (Bath Mix)

This week’s entry to the Local Selection Mix Series welcomes esteemed Subject resident Niall Cleary. The massively talented and ever-consistent DJ has put forward a sensational mix featuring 57 tracks with a host of Irish and international talent throughout.

Niall has been a key cog in the Dublin techno machine since the early 2000s when nights like Electric City and venues such as Redbox and the old Tivoli Theatre were in their prime. A student of the fast, loop-driven techno from the late 90s, and early 2000s eras, his sets are high energy, full of fast transitions and expert blends.

Since late 2009, Niall has been a resident DJ with the renowned Subject events, playing alongside some of the biggest names in house, techno, and electro, as well as appearances at clubs and festivals such as District 8, Index, Twisted Pepper, Life, and Electric Picnic. Niall also holds a residency on Dublin Digital Radio where he plays alongside Mutate Events who host a bi-monthly techno show on Thursday nights where they focus on showcasing emerging and already-established Irish artists.

Having played alongside techno stalwarts Dave Clarke, Paula Temple, Surgeon, DJ Bone, Jeff Mills, DVS1, Juan Atkins, Karenn, and more, Niall’s pedigree in providing a classy warm-up set is frankly second to none. Niall’s skill behind a pair of turntables is not restricted to serving up the starters, as he’s been frequently found dishing out peak-time tools at numerous Irish festivals including Life Festival, Electric Picnic, and more.

Niall’s entry to the Local Selection features a range of brilliant artists that include SHDW & Obscure Shape, Alarico, Truncate, Lars Huismann, Tommy Holohan, Doug Cooney, Aero, Mode_1, Slam, Casper Hastings, and more throughout and just coming in at just over 2 hours in length. Making for a thoroughly enjoyable techno workout. Sorted.

SPLOT is back with the most extensive body of work to date. We’re proud to present Crystalline: 10-track VA with gems from the talent of Polish underground scene. Spanning over a variety of styles and genres. Crystalline is truly an encapsulation of different musical inspirations that gave birth to SPLOT. And a sign of what’s to come.

Crystalline moves towards the urban dancehall and mutant bass with opening track ‘kostomłoty’ from the local underground musician repmeis. Next up is don dadan karambolo, SPLOT ambassador who brings cold bassline and one-of-a-kind dub-stepping business in ‘dym’. Drum and bass professor continues his multigenre journey. Mighty Satl rolls out dubby, techno-flavoured and syncopated rhythms in ‘Noodles142’.

Wrocław based Michał Łoboda comes next with an introspective broken techno tool. ‘evergreen’ explores the spaces of soothing bass and damp ambiance. The vibe is continued by another local talent. Rethe presents sophisticated production skills on his deep and spaced-out track. Dominated by massive drums and absorbing textures, ‘Under Construction’ is a first-class heady dancefloor destroyer. Prime cuts of UK-inspired rhythms are provided by holoe. Driven by powerful bassline, garage keys and rude electro, ‘screwface’ fulfills promise in the title.

One-half of a cult Warsaw duo Private Press, 2Shy comes with a hybrid of dubstep-influenced techno, rolling drums and trance structures that plunge the listener into a mental rollercoaster with ‘Nexu Modes’. Fischerle brings his tape-ambient feeling to a stomping, dub-heavy ‘Omoluzu’, which twists organic percussions and dense atmospheres together into a spiral.

A long time live-act performer Adam Salamøn puts together his first track ‘Elegy for the Clouds’, being a captivating ambient piece, which guides us through a misty tropical forest, finished with emotive pads. Representing Warsaw, Cafe de la Jungle brings cyberspace-tribal energy on the title track ‘Crystalline 99’. Channelling the futuristic and psychedelic sounds of early 1990s jungle, he closes the release and leads us into the sound of the new millennium.

There isn’t many who would disagree with the underlying sentiment that electronic music makes us feel something extraordinary. Much in the same way, the possibilities for creative discourse and cosmic interactivity are accessible to anyone with an open mind. It’s in this place where these possibilities materialise, and it’s in this space where SYNCROPHONE 39 operates within.

You see, you won’t find cleverly constructed adjectives or nonsensical descriptors for the music presented here. It doesn’t need them. The music speaks for itself, much in the same way the artists do. Stojche has been carving out timeless techno for two decades now, working tirelessly without fanfare to enrich a scene that sits close to his heart. Whether that be through releases on his own imprint TANGIBLE ASSETS or the ever expanding a.r.t.less, his trademark sound signature is synonymous with the soul of Detroit. You may be hard pressed to find anyone else who’s been as consistent with this sound over the years as he has. On the other hand, Gerard Hanson aka Convextion has been doing exactly that without fault his entire career. So the combination of these two artists on this release makes perfect sense.

Syncro39 is a celebration of core values in music. Of devotion to a singular obsession crafted over the course of decades devoid of trends or cheap influences, social or otherwise. It’s that unwillingness to compromise and to put everything on the line in the pursuit of the dreaming process that makes this a special release.

One thing is for certain. Those who are inspired by Stojche’s signature original and the timeless journey of Convextion’s remix, will carry themselves through the smoke and haze into the sunlight as it takes some time for the rush to subside. That’s probably an apt abstract for this release thus far. For the most part though, the narrative for Stojche has only just begun.
