As part of RA2122, our ongoing celebration of 21 years of club culture, we'll be featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties or clubs most important to their lives in dance music. DJ Voices will be playing our RA2122 party in New York this Saturday, November 29th.

DJ Voices is a prime example of an artist that really can do it all. The New York-based artist, originally from Florida, has been an integral part of New York's electronic music as a DJ and as a booker at one of the city's best venues, Nowadays. Voices got her footing as a selector as a founding member of the DJ collective Working Women, but these days she performs solo through her Nowadays residency and her radio show on The Lot, Nothing In Moderation. Her sets are known for their psychedelic dynamism—her selection, with which she prioritizes "energy and drama over genre," often flits from rolling low-end music, uptempo tracks (that she then slows all the way down) and wonky leftfield beats. 

"It would be hard to overstate how much Nowadays is part of my story at this point, personally and professionally," Voices told RA in the following interview. Her approach to assembling this mix she recorded for us makes that abundantly clear. The mix she recorded for RA—which sprawls out over almost three hours—features tracks that she has either played in her five-year tenure at Nowadays or that she plans to play there in the future. She organized the set in a similar way to the way she goes about her Nowadays sets. She kicks off with fast and nimble bass music ("I like to start fast in hopes of people dancing half-time"), then transitions into a knotty web of dubstep and bright percussive tracks and closes with weightless jungle. The playlist she sourced from to create this mix featured music from every Nowadays resident. It's this same thoughtfulness and meticulous attention to detail that has made her a household name in her local scene.

A label focused on DIY electronics, post punk, dub and techno from now and before.

The first release is from the talented West London artist, singer and songwriter Tutu Ta. A mini LP of out there, dubbed up, post punk mutations meeting old sounding industrial electronics following from his highly acclaimed debut album last year on Macadam Mambo.

Its already seen the light of day on soundsystems across the city and further afield as well as stations like NTS, Rinse & Tom Ravenscroft's BBC 6 New Music Fix.

Devon Hansen is a San Diego born, Montreal residing man who goes under many names. Some know him for his beats project as Lotide which saw an album out on Astro:Dynamics back in 2013 or most notably his Stefan Jos project with an EP on Opal Tapes and an album/ EP on Japan's experimental Flau label run by Yasuhiko Fukuzono. Thats not forgetting his self titled D.Hansen release on All City favorite Where To Now? back in 2014. 
That being said he also throws together a good mix so its only right that we welcome him into the All City mixes series with just over an hour of experimental beats house and techno I wouldnt recommend you sleep on this one and get right into it.

In 2006, flau honcho aus @a-u-s made a mixtape for a gig 'dot' at SALON, Koenji with El Fog, Yui Onodera and Yusuke Kamijima. When the mix was published in International Tapes @mrintl, an introduction by E.Neubauten and Tsumugine was added in 2012 . The mix includes many tracks by Japanese artists, mainly from the internet archive and early electronics.

Meandering through his label’s multifarious maze of musically mesmerising releases, Flau’s Yasuhiko Fukuzono aka aus, harvests a mellow mix of tracks to encourage us to recline, unwind and drift off.

"The tracks I’ve chosen for this Slumber mix are a sonically diverse array of sounds from flau’s catalogue over the past 6 years incl. folktronic, classical, avant-garde, dream pop, microsounds, audio collages and complex beat experiments. Featuring an international cast of artists, I wanted to represent a vast repertoire of work, but still retain the soothing and subtle sound aesthetic that has become synonymous with the label’s musical output. I’ve just returned to Japan from touring Europe and was a little absent-minded when creating the mix due to jetlag. Some people say that sunlight, water, medication, coffee and changing your body temperature can help you beat jetlag. For me it’s about relaxing, and there’s no better way to relax then by listening to music. In a way, this mix is my way of beating jetlag. It’s the perfect mix to unwind to. So slip on your headphones, sit back and wonder off to the ethereal sounds of everblooming cherry blossoms."
