For the 12th episode of Crates & Waves, Moose Dawa puts together a 2-hour tribute to the late and great Tupac Amaru Shakur. Growing up, he was one of the first hiphop-artists that I really started to dig into even though I didn’t know the impact he made on the world until later on. As time passed and I got older I started to watch documentaries and understood that the ways he write his lyrics are more like poems and always with a true meaning, showing that he was more than an artist and a true leader of his people. 

In this episode I’d like to pay a tribute to his legacy and art by playing some of my favorite tracks of his and songs he sampled over the years. You’ll hear tracks from 2pac himself, along with Prince, Zapp, Alicia Myers, Linda Clifford & The Isley Brothers to name a few.

It is the raw tonality and temperament that makes Josefine a fearsome reputation as a selector. Straight to the point with elements of colorful melodies, reflected through infectious tribal-esque rhythms and old school flavors - is what appears throughout her music and in her sets. As a music collector, Josefine’s preferred format as a DJ is vinyl and her techno is a powerful intent to build tension, climaxing into a frenzy of emotions, and also the reason why Josefine is one of the most sought-after DJs in the Scandinavian region. 

Interview with Josefine Hellström: 

Q: What made you start DJing?
A: It all started on the dancefloor. I’ve always loved a proper rave, and back in 2011-2012, the underground scene in Malmö was thriving. It gave me a space to explore and fall in love with techno, and I started producing and mixing around the same time. I’ve been obsessed with music since I was born, though, and began playing the piano at a young age. It’s in my blood. But I found my true home and creativity in techno.
 

Q: Describe your style in three words.
A: Timeless, dynamic, cathartic
 

Q: Your best set in 2023/2024?
A: Impossible to choose! If I had to pick two, they’d probably be my set at Fokus open air last summer and my recent b2b2b2b at Pissa i Motvind (Inkonst) with Kalevi Palomäki, Johanna Knutsson and Kanyl. Both were amazing.
 

Q: Your favorite track right now?
A:  Introversion - Mania
 

Q: A track you never get tired of?
A: Ferdinger – Plein Soleil


Q: Where can one find the best falafel in Malmö?
A: Värnhems Falafel. It's on another level.

It’s time for the 14th episode of Crates & Waves and Moose Dawa is joined by the talented Sweden-based DJ & producer Qrusifix to join in on the second hour. First part of the episode, Moose Dawa dives into a laidback hour with a blend of newer and older gems within soul & jazz that’s been in rotation lately. Tracks from Mandrill, Gianni Brezzo, Nora Orlando & Underground Canopy and more. In the second hour, Qrusifix takes over with a well-thought selection from some of his favorites off his latest record-diggings. Soulful & bumpy tracks from all over the globe with tracks from Sally Kemp, Collage, Earline Owens & Princeworth to name a few.

Qrusifix is a DJ & producer based in the city of Kalmar, Sweden. For several years, Qrusifix have been an avid record-collector with love for everything from hiphop, funk & soul to disco-gems across the globe down to 90’s house. His selections has brought it’s way to mixes with NTS Radio, Mutual Intentions and Nitty Gritty Store Hours to name a few. Earlier this year he also released his first double-tracker ”Let Me Lead U/Figure Life Out” on a limited 7” through label Hiphop Weekend, which showcases a glimpse of his talents in production.

His extensive record collection is a proof of his continuous passion for crate-digging and resulted in his own expertise when it comes to his taste and selection. This has made Nyboe a well-known name in the Danish hiphop-scene, opening up for international acts such as Crimeapple, Boldy James & Alchemist to name a few, aswell as getting recognition from abroad when winning international mixtape competitions by Wax Poetics x Polaroid and Reloop. Nyboe also ran the Danish hiphop label Idiotsikker Records for 10 years where they released 20+ vinyl records and also was responsible for the vinyl-department for the renowned label Run For Cover for 8 years.
