Episode 1 - For Starters: Little Women

In Episode Two, we're reading the first chapter of The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy, a Hungarian-born English novelist and playwrights of the late Victorian Era. This excerpt has been lightly edited to translate most of the French words into English. Listen through the end to hear our recommendations for a great movie version of the story, and where you can find the rest of the book!

Episode 2 - For Starters: The Scarlet Pimpernel

In Episode Three we will be hearing chapters 3-4 of The Boxcar Children. By Gertrude Chandler Warner, the first story was originally published in 1924. Warner, a first-grade teacher, created the story of four orphan siblings. She went on to write 18 more books about the children, mostly mysteries they solve.

Episode 3 - For Starters: The Boxcar Children

This time on For Starters, we present the opening chapters of E. Nesbit’s 1907 comic fantasy, The Enchanted Castle. Like many of her other books, this story involves middle class English children having adventures largely without adult supervision. This book displays Nesbit’s excellent sense of humor and blends childhood imagination and magic in ways which are surprising and often hilarious.
