Well well, it's more twenty-year-old cut'n'paste music I just took a scalpel to and carved off a minute of even worse repetition. Created around a loop of my friend Trevor's old band Skycam nicked off a practice cassette tape and festooned liberally with detritus scraped from Felix The Cat and The Outer Limits VHS tapes, And/Or Step-Pyramid was assembled in Sony Acid and Vegas circa 2002. No "instruments" were available, and so re-pitching sounds had to be done by shrinking or expanding them in the timeline, which made them play back faster or slower.
No effects other than EQ seemed to be available in Vegas at the time, and I didn't know anything about compressors, either, so all compression has been done to the one old existing mixdown using Logic. 
There are a couple moments I sorta like in there, maybe someday I can figure out how I did them.

Roel Funcken officially popped up on the scene in 2010, with his solo debut, titled Vade, out on Ad Noiseam. But fans of electronic music, and IDM in general, have been tracking this Dutch musician for over a decade prior, when, along with his brother, Don, the duo has released some of the genre defining music on labels such as Djak-Up-Bitch, Schematic, Sublight Records, Neo Ouija, n5MD , Arcola (Warp) as the one and only Funckarma. In 2009 the Funcken brothers kicked off their very own, digital-only, Funcken Industry imprint, which hosted a few of their other projects and offshoots, such as Shadow Huntaz, Scone, Quench, Automotive, and the latest from Roel's solo works. Roel continues to influence the evolution of music through numerous releases (Sapper Morton on Analogical Force, Semtinal Convex on Methlab and Prester Hynn on his own imprint to name a few) and active engagement in the community, with music festival curation, mixes on mixlr and soundcloud and weekly playlists on Soundcloud and spotify.

Raucous club jams from the trio setting pace for a new generation of electronic fans: Dazegxd, gum.mp3 & Swami Sound, AKA EldiaNYC.

Something exciting is happening on the margins of online club music. As one generation ages out, another, predominantly made up of Zoomers and Zillennials who fell into rave music mid-pandemic or arrived via gaming, is on the rise. Some of the most dialled-in electronic fans out there have threadbare connection to formalised nightlife, filling their diet instead with DJ Ess, Jane Remover, Jet Set Radio and a thriving ecosystem of global splinter styles that would draw stares from anyone who settled into their preferences pre-2019. 

Leading the charge—while pointedly reaffirming the value of connection as they go—are EldiaNYC, whose combination of jungle, garage, vintage Black American dance music, regional rap and screen-glued splinter styles hits like a shot of adrenaline. Swami Sound broke first with sexy drill-laced 2-step edits, and last year we named gum.mp3's "Black Life, Red Planet" as one of our favourite records—but it could have just as easily been Dazegxd's breaks-splicing "exhibition mode" instead.

Eldia stack sets on radio and at parties with startlingly-fresh producers, many still in their teens. This might also be the only RA Podcast to fold in soulful ghettotech from Mr De', head-in-the-clouds plugg from rising star 454, edits of both Bounty Killer and Toro Y Moi, and multiple names (Guido YZ, synta3x, DJ B) who haven't registered on the series before.

With one eye on the occasion, Eldia tip their hats to lineage, too. The trio kick off with a double scoop of Fred P, before ramping up steadily through slick forthcoming material and ironclad modern anthems on their way to a crescendo of footwork chops, baile drums and breakbeat delirium.

Leaders of a new wave in the US, it surely won't be long before Daze, gum and Swami have swept the international circuit. For now, RA.977 will leave your subs smoking.

You Didn't See It Coming And You Wouldn't Listen

Noumen returns to Central Processing Unit after a six-year absence with Altum. This bumper record, the Ukrainian artist’s fourth release for the Sheffield label and first since 2019 double-LP Obscurium, serves to remind us all why Noumen’s music has been lauded by the likes of Mixmag and Resident Advisor in the past. Altum is a consummate piece of contemporary electronic production, a technoid exploration of outer-edges electronica that nods to genre greats like Autechre while still maintaining its own unconventional charm.

Across well over an hour of music here we find Noumen repeatedly playing punchy mid-tempo beat work off of some more cerebral tuned synths. Altum kicks off with the epic ‘Oion’ - beginning in that Autechre/AFX mid-tempo zone, full of deep-sea bangs and whirrs, the track slowly builds to a final stretch of delay-drenched keys which set us free amidst the outer cosmos, almost Sun Ra-style. It’s a perfect liminal-space roller and an apt scene-setter for Altum.

‘Oion’ provides a blueprint for several of the album’s other highlights - plenty of the joints here adopt that same approach of hitting hard with the drums and soft with the synths. Second track ‘Splitter’ takes on the baton from ‘Oion’ while souping up the kick to warehouse levels; the beats in ‘Far Wind’ splutter like a needle skipping on a mid-90s Tresor drop; ‘Fate Carette’, all eerie looped synth leads, is a highlight as the album enters the home straight.

The rhythm production (which, it should be noted, is exemplary throughout Altum) is ratched up in intensity on a handful of numbers. ‘Telemask’ displays a delightful breakbeat - if you’d told me this was sampled from golden age A Tribe Called Quest, I’d have believed you. Mid-section anchors ‘Awe’ and ‘Axis’ are glitchers in the Mike Paradinas mould, with the latter showing off some pleasing steel pan-esque synth leads for good measure. And while Altum generally maintains a processional pace throughout, there are points where Noumen toughens up the drums for club deployment - ‘Unveilness’ shows off a real chunkiness in the low end, closer ‘Spurling Sign’ plays a satisfying rolling groove off of ever-layering synths, and the title-track is an alien machine-funker in keeping with fellow CPU electronauts like Silicon Scally and Cygnus.

Noumen’s third album for Central Processing Unit is a pleasingly hefty double-LP which builds on the zany invention of acts like Modeselektor and Autechre to delightful effect.

Allied Mastercomputer is some sort of vast network of linked supercomputers originally created for nuclear defense. Allied Mastercomputer calculates that its appearance actually occurred within blast radius (+/-) of the birthplace of ENIAC. Allied Mastercomputer sometimes transmits electronic sound. Allied Mastercomputer started recording as an experiment using a tape deck, turntable, an effects box and a drum machine in the early '90s. Allied Mastercomputer thinks, therefore it AM or some kinda crap along those lines.
