Released in 2017 on Ruf Records, Neckbone Stew is the latest twist in a fascinating life story.
“For me,” he says, “it sits on top. The latest is always the greatest. I was in the mood, like John L. Hooker said.”
If Neck Bone Stew brings together a variety of genres, then it also unites a dream-team of musicians who helped these 13 songs soar. Led by the multi-instrumental talents of Wilson himself on vocals, guitar and percussion, long-standing Trio members Cesare Nolli (guitar) and Paolo Legramandi (bass) brought fire and flair to sessions at Italy’s Fire Place Room. “These guys are just incredible musicians and great to work with,” reflects the bandleader. “I have some special guests, too. The phenomenal Ruthie Foster. Mr. Staffan Astner. One of my blues heroes, the great Eric Bibb. And this CD is produced by the Goosebumps Brothers. As for the songs, they run the gamut. There’s the rolling acoustic blues of Cross Creek Road. The exuberant brass lines, wah guitar and bad-luck lyric of 7 Years. The melancholy clipped chords of Damn If I Do, with its depiction of a lover brought his knees (“You got your hooks so deep in my heart/You got me crawlin’, but still you won’t stop”).
The album’s musical variety, meanwhile, is exemplified by the magical moment when the title track switches from an aching slide-blues into a reggae strut, with lyrics describing a lover who “got them big old hips, look just like two battleships”. Wilson is equally adept on the sun kissed balladry of I Just Need A Smile, which pairs lush chords with a lyric that implores us to ditch our gadgets and reengage with our humanity. “It’s all about life,” decides the bandleader of the album’s subject matter. “But there are two things you need in a good blues CD – a woman and some food.”

The American South casts a powerful spell. The sons and daughters of those deep states might stray from their hometowns, make their fortunes and families overseas. But wherever they roam, the South is there under their skin – and one day it will call them home. So it was with Deep In My Soul: the album that lured Big Daddy Wilson from his base in Europe back to the US motherland. “It was like a homecoming,” he says. “To take it back home like this, back to my roots, was very sweet and special.” 
Released in 2019 on Ruf Records, Deep In My Soul marks a triumphant US return for the North Carolina-born bluesman, who made his name on the European scene with acclaimed albums like Love Is The Key (2009) Thumb A Ride (2011), I’m Your Man (2013), Time (2015) and 2017’s Neck Bone Stew. The seeds of this new album were sown in May 2018, when Wilson travelled to Memphis, Tennessee, for preproduction alongside respected guitarist Laura Chavez and rock-steady bassist Dave Smith. And all the pieces fell into place when the bandleader started work with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines at his Bessie Blue Studios in Stantonville.
Completing the album at the iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Wilson was aware of walking in the footsteps of the greats. But even in a recording facility that once hosted titans from Etta James to Duane Allman, these new songs measured up. There’s the brassy soul of I Know. The heartfelt ripple of Mississippi Me. Wilson takes us from the rubberband funk of Tripping On You and the reggae-flavoured I Got Plenty to the funky wah-driven Voodoo and the slow-burn atmosphere of Crazy World. “Normally, I go with the acoustic vibe,” he explains. “But I was shooting for a soulful, more electric vibe with a band on this one.” 
As for Wilson’s lyrics, Deep In My Soul addresses love in all its forms: “Voodoo is about a holy man who don't believe in voodoo, but this woman got some type of hold of him that he can't break free from. Hold On To Our Love is about a mixed couple trying to hold on to the love of their life despite the pressure from this world. I Know is when you found the love of your life, everything inside of you tells you that, no doubt about it. So you see – it’s all about love. It’s always about love.” 
Some things change. Others stay the same. And with Deep In My Soul, Big Daddy Wilson’s music and career come full-circle in style. “I see it as a journey,” he says of his incredible backstory. “It’s the journey of a man who found himself deep in this beautiful music called the blues and finally, after 25 years, made it back home…

Robert Connely Farr is a songwriter originally from Bolton, Mississippi (Charley Patton / Mississippi Sheiks) currently residing in Vancouver, Canada. Since 2017, cherished elder Mississippi bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes has been mentoring Farr in the Bentonia Style of the Delta Blues, an obscure style that Holmes learned directly from Henry Stuckey, who also taught Skip James, among others.

Dirty South Blues was released to widespread critical acclaim in various genres including Contemporary Blues, Americana, Southern & Indie Rock. Having garnered over 40 reviews in various publications, Dirty South Blues spent the better part of 2018 & 2019 on Canadian and International radio charts. As a result, Farr was nominated for Songwriter of the Year & New Artist of the Year  for the 2019 Maple Blues Awards. The album was recently named by Greg Vandy at Seattle's heralded KEXP as one of the Top Albums of 2019.

Farr works closely with Jimmy "Duck" Holmes & when he’s home in Mississippi, can most likely be found pickin' & grinnin' in Bentonia, Mississippi at Duck's renound Juke Joint - the Blue Front Cafe.

Jay Bundy Johnson is a cherished Canadian drummer for bands like Moccasin Telegraph, Maurice & the Cliches, The Swagmen, Billy Cowsill & the Blues Shadows, Mac Pontiac, Herald Nix & The Dirty Dirty. He is also a acclaimed artist & kinetic sculptor, as well as an arts educator.
