The legend of the Wodnica tells the story of beautiful yet deadly water spirits who inhabited Polish rivers and lakes, particularly the Vistula. The Wodnica had a fondness for salt, which was often transported by raftsmen along the river, and they would attack men sailing downstream. These enchanting women, adorned with lilac flower crowns and pearl necklaces, lured the raftsmen with their beauty and song.

Their melody was so mesmerizing that men would lose their senses and leap into the water to reach its source, only to meet their death in the arms of the Wodnica. Experienced raftsmen knew that they had to sprinkle holy water on their goods before setting out and, if a Wodnica appeared, strike her with an oar before she could begin singing.

The Wodnica didn’t limit themselves to the rivers. On moonlit nights, they would emerge onto the shores to search for victims, and at times, disguised as beggars, they would kidnap children from villages. Some, however, risked a deliberate encounter with them, believing that if they carved a simple willow flute while the Wodnica sang, the instrument would absorb part of her power, granting the player fame and fortune.
