Premiere: 'Anderson - Various Shades': 06 Hooked On Sonics - 2v2

The Bobby Donny label hits number four with a first EP of 2016. After efforts from label owner Frits Wentink and Eindhoven producer SAN2, this one comes from Tlim Shug. The low-profile American producer has only one EP to his name so far, but it was an impressive one that came on Echovolt Records last year and suggested he has a passion for moody and lo-fi deep house.

'Rari Techno' is up first and operates in an underground cavern. It sets a sombre tone with its swirling pads and buried deep kicks all obscured by a grainy sheen of dust. That analogue warmth continues with 'Wig $plit' which has a loose and raw percussive line laid over tender piano chords, bumpy drums and a gritty vocal rap. It’s a fresh fusion that will get clubs on their toes before 'Mutuality' again sounds all knackered and broke, scuffed up and imperfect with its squelchy synths, off time hits and stuttering kicks. Last of all 'Overcaste Tune' is another zoned out and moody deep house offering that sounds like L.I.E.S. artist Terekke at his best. This is a brilliantly insular and atmospheric EP that oozes subtle emotion and a cautious sense of optimism.

The Parisian producer and Red Lebanese co-founder started releasing music as Mad Rey in 2014, providing D.KO Records with their second release (having already contributed to the D.KO01 various artists EP under his real name Quentin Leroy).  He now joins Rekids with a solid two track package initiating with ‘In My House N°6’, a lively slice of house featuring funky bass licks and jazz influenced melodies complete with a compelling groove. On the flip, ‘L’orage (Dub)’ slows down the tempo whilst exhibiting sampled strings, crunchy snares and twinkling effects.

"I made that track in a phase in which I was quite isolated and almost entirely focusing on making music. The name comes from video game character Raiden (Metal Gear Solid). He always had this alienated/outcast vibe which is something I think a lot of Artists can relate to. There is a lot of fear and unresolved emotions in him of which’s origin he doesn’t even really know until details of his past are revealed later on. 

So what the track actually means to me is that I had a lot of fear to face shit inside myself which inevitably came to the surface in those states of isolation and deprivation. All of that was triggered by some really challenging psychedelic experiences which left me being quite detached from reality and having panic attacks for months subsequently. But contrary to my beliefs at that time i found that there is a lot of peace and a sense of spaciousness to be found in those areas of oneself as soon as one manages to surrender. I guess what the track gave me was some relief when I really needed it."

Nomadic producer Zen in Space releases LP Earth Tones, following two consecutively sold-out 12” releases on Moonshoe [MSH003] and Post Pluto [PPC001].

The warm & lush textures of Earth Tones were produced over 2 years with inspiration taken across Australia’s vast & captivating landscape. Here, we hear an array of sounds from ambient to downtempo, as well as experimental electronic. Earth Tones features various live instrumentation, analogue synthesis, drum machines and exotic rainforest, outback & wilderness field recordings; captured throughout Australia’s rich landscapes.

Zen took big inspiration from artists such as Four Tet, Boards of Canada, Floating Points, and J Dilla in creation of this project. Earth Tones aims to encapsulate the intense beauty of natural earth in all its shapes and forms, and the value we must give to its diverse landscapes & life. 

Earth Tones hopes to bring attention to the value & significance in preserving & respecting natural ecosystems & their deeply delicate & ancient systems.

Philip Budny’s trajectory has been hallmarked by entrancing, danceable lullabies on discerning labels such as Coastal Haze, Lionoil Industries and most recently, Let’s Play House. ‘Shades of Blue’ feels like the natural evolution of an artist who has been meticulously carving out his own distinctive mellow sound. By showcasing a progression into more astral, melancholy textures, Budny delivers his most accomplished and personal record to date.

Sheer musicality and blissed out brilliance is evident from the get go with ‘5459’, which hisses and swings with the sort of expansive drum programming and breathy pads with which Budny has become synonymous. ‘Belfast’ sounds like HNNY at his most masterful. With its ethereal live instrumentation, it provides the perfect palette for a truly reflective and introspective piece of house music that builds into a marvelously layered crescendo.

The warm, fuzzy ‘Moritzplatz, 2013’ feels like a reassuring lullaby, and closer to a Mac DeMarco track than what you’d expect from a typical house release. ‘Shades of Blue’ is a more dancefloor ready track, invigorating and perhaps subtly inspired by some of the textures of one of Philp’s longtime friends, Telfort. ‘Still Beating’ shifts the pace once more, settling calmly into a soothing 2 step rhythm. The deeply personal ‘Take Care’ is a luscious experimental track that would fit perfectly in a vintage Aphex Twin set. ‘Too Late To Turn Back Now’ - a goosebump-inducing, soothing number - feels on par with the very best Smallville releases from the early 2010s.

We’ve all heard of Business Techno taking over the interwebs, but it could be argued that Workplace Spotify Deep House is an even more banal beast. ‘Shades of Blue’ is a beacon of hope. This ambitious, assonant record from the Berlin-based maestro will undoubtedly spur on his contemporaries and admirers to level up in the best way possible.

On this record, Budny gives us all hope in uncertain times with a slice of the best kind of house music possible - melodic and timeless. It is laced with an afterglow that sticks with you long after the record stops spinning.
