Standard Deviation is thrilled to present @hanna_svirska's latest work, YANGOLA. The central themes of the EP are celebration of spring and faith in the revival. This motive is explored through the mysticism of Ukrainian myths, but also finds a more literal meaning in the circumstances and setting in which the EP was produced. The Single ’Vesnianka’ is out today!

Exploring the traditional themes of ancient Ukrainian folklore, YANGOLA creates a story based on personal and shared mythologies: in ‘Vesnianka’, the protagonist is trying to find an angel, but there are a lot of skeptics around her who don't believe in the angel's existence or do but have given up searching. The angel appears only in spring when the earth has the most power, preparing for its renewal. If someone sees the angel's light, they will begin the regeneration process of the Universe. The Black Beast (‘Chornyi Zvir’) will turn to ashes, and the young Cossack will not die under a tall willow tree (‘Vysoka Verba’). The characters trying to find the angel get lost in their dreams and wander through the woods. They travel in time, plunging into the achievements of their ancestors. The name YANGOLA (derived from the Ukrainian word for angel) stands for an imagined musical genre, like a lullaby, legend, or ballad. YANGOLA is a genre of finding renewal, light, and infinite hope.

The release is supported with a remix of ’Chornyi Zvir’ by the Parisian audiovisual experimentalist and Subtext Records affiliate, Aho Ssan.

"You cannot put your foot in the same river twice. Once ᴇʀᴏꜱɪᴏɴ ᴛʀᴀᴄᴇ begins, the listener is quick to draw comparison to previous Glyn Maier releases, as in ɪɴᴅᴇꜰɪɴɪᴛᴇ ʟᴀᴛᴛɪᴄᴇꜱ or the B-Side from the Jungle Gym release ʜʟɪɴᴄ. Instead, what happens is the truest descriptor of a “departure” in style and pacing.

Going back into the deeper catalog of Maier’s work you would likely cross influences of dub techno in the clicking and delaying bass tones, with sharp field recording rustling and chirps that create a fecund listening ecosphere.

This new album instead changes the pace to a glacial presentation, starting with a dark and sleek motif, generously pouring into rhythm and more subdued field recordings of the Appalachian wilderness. It almost seems like an album showcasing Maier’s ability to listen as much as it is his ability to produce. The finishing work with synth and string sections is a sublime reminder of his deft and capable craft in sound. We may not stand in the same water as before, but the river has the same name."

Ephemera is a visceral amalgamation between artists Bride and IVORY BLACK; a joint rapture saturated with interpersonal vehemence and the desire to express themselves through a perception of sentimentality and assertion. 

Their debut record as Ephemera will be released on ALLOY CHOIR in April 2024.

‘And Now You Stand Before The Sun’ is a culmination, a closing chapter of the journey that began with 2022’s ‘Like The Reformed’ and succeeded by last year’s ‘Oath (Soon The Storm Will Pass, And We Will Fly Again)’. The record sees Paavo Piekkari and Jonathan Engeldahl fleshing out the microcosm they call Hollowland, resulting in their most mature and fully realised work to date. Beyond the rapturous sonics, there is a deep melancholy woven into the very essence of Hollowland that is present through it all.

At its core the record is about the hope that anguish and sorrow will lead to something beautiful and pure, persistance shed of the often glorified scaly skin of martyrdom. Notions of departing from oneself, to be reborn and catch a glimpse of the coveted silver lining, are explored on tracks such as ‘Ov Your Own Image’, ‘Falls’ and ‘As You Stand Beneath It, The Light Burns Brighter Than Before’. On ‘In Open Arms’ and Purest Form’ the endless cycle reaches its inevitable conclusion of incarnation, chronicling the very moments of becoming. Consider it a sign of stillness, at least for now.

The passing storm won’t be the last, yet we embrace the fleeting moment of light beyond the clouds, using it to release all within.

a small snippet of a live performance by the Intonarumori Trio at the opening of When The Fog Clears as part of The Ten Days On The Island Festival. This was the exhibition where i got to exhibit Caligo Paean, so a big evening for me......more about the trio here

Formed in 2018, The Intonarumori Trio is Danielle Kirby, Mat Ward and Dylan Banks. All three are Hobart based artists whose individual professional practices all span 20 plus years. They have diverse artistic backgrounds that include painting, instrument and theatre design, installation, classical music, noise- art, graphic design and academic research. They have all exhibited, published and performed extensively across Australia as well as undertaken international art-based residencies.  

The trio explore the more occult-centric aspects of Russolo’s practice, approaching performances as a ritualistic space to play with the idea of connection and communication beyond the human realm. 

Russolo believed, and pursued the idea that noise could be used as a bridge to spiritual understanding. He sought to congure and transform energy through the Intonarumori’s ability to ‘spiritualise’ noise. 

Performances by the Trio are pure improvisation, allowing the space and the air to guide the players. The clips are from various performances and studio sessions 2018 - 2025

die Reihe is the moniker of NYC based composer and sound engineer Jack Callahan. Taken from the journal edited by Herbert Eimert and Karlheinz Stockhausen, die Reihe makes work that often examines and abstracts a single musical element, from the functioning of a vocoder to the harmony of house music. With this project he has toured the both the U.S. and Europe multiple times, been invited to numerous festivals and has released music with labels such as anòmia, Ascetic House, NNA Tapes, and Salon. In 2013 he founded Bánh Mì Verlag, an imprint dedicated to contemporary experimental music and culture.
