In this episode I speak with travel writer and poet Roy Duffield about our experiences with various scams around the world. We then look at a play by play account of a recent incident that happened to me while crossing a border. 

We'll look at the red flags that should have told me something was wrong, and what those warnings look like in other common scams targeting travellers. 

There is also a review of the techniques that can be used to get out of a situation before you lose your money. But mostly this comes down to strategic use of two short words.

Paris Syndrome and Culture Shock

Part one of me nerding out over one of the great travellers of history you may not have heard about. For thirty years in the 1300s, Tangier's most famous son Ibn Battuta travelled over 73,000 miles across the medieval world. In these episodes I pick a few of my favourite stores from the book he wrote after returning to Morocco and talk to Mat about life and travel in the medieval era.

My interview last week with Lou Henwood ran a bit long, and so I needed to cut out some of the less travel related digressions to get it to my usual 30  minutes or so.

We did have a really interesting chat about the time she was in the country during Typhoon Haiyan, at the time the strongest storm to have ever made landfall anywhere in the world. So I've put it up as a bit of bonus content.

The Green Revolution

Join us once again in the history hole. This time Mat and I talk about an event that not very many people outside North Cambridgeshire know about, inspired by my driving around the area this summer.

The Littleport Riot of 1816 was one of a large number of food riots across the UK during the early 19th century. In this part we explore the background to the events and what happens when a group of farm labourers reach the end of their tether. It turns out they invent some pretty ingenious weapons systems.
