Recorded on the 18th of November 2016 at the end of 56 gates wall in Dedham Vale in England.
Recording material included a JrF hydrophone and JrF contact microphone plugged into a Zoom H2n.

Light Gets In

A greeting/sweeper from Sam in Melbourne, with some spooky pigeon noises and faint electronic music in the background. Thanks, Sam!

Transcript: "Hello, ah, my name is Sam, I live in Melbourne, Australia. Today, I walked the city with my friend Hannah and even though it was a city we saw, I, I still think of it as, in many ways, the great outdoors, for various reasons. And we walked the Yarra River. And I’m looking at my pedometer and we walked twenty one thousand, six hundred and ninety three [21,693] steps today . . .  And you’re listening to Queer Out Here."

In July 2018, I followed the valley of the River Rother in East Sussex from source to sea. It took four days, and involved some extreme (for England) heat as well as a day of driving winds and soaking rain. I took recordings of the river from the point I first crossed it as a small trickle to the place it meets the sea.

As hot air balloons passed over our neighbourhood, the local dog population went into overdrive.

[Seagulls, voices of kids playing. When Dan speaks it sounds muffled and slightly echoey.]

This is Dan. I’m in a playground on the top of Galley Hill in Bexhill, talking to you through one of those weird tube communication things they have in playgrounds these days. And you are listening to Queer Out Here.

[The mic is withdrawn into the open air, gulls and other bird and child noises become sharper, clearer. Background traffic, slight wind. When Dan speaks again, he is close to the mic.]

Remember those days when you could . . . go out? Come along with Aneurin (they/them) and Kermie (they/them) and meet some animal friends at Collingwood Children's Farm on Wurundjeri land, Melbourne, Australia. Special thanks to Fly the dog, pictured.

TRANSCRIPT

[A gate opens on the sounds of a valley filled with birdsong, farm animals, faint voices, and a hint of cityscape]

Aneurin & Kermie: Hi! [Laughter]

Aneurin: I'm Aneurin -

Kermie: And I'm Kermie -

Aneurin: And that's Fly the dog, being very quiet. [People shuffle by] Oh, good girl, Fly.
[Some sheep bleat. A pig snuffles up close, against a metal fence]

Kermie: Who's the pig?

Aneurin: Oh!  The pig's name is Maybelle, according to the sign, on the paddock. [Maybelle huffs a few times]

Kermie: [whispering] Thank you, Maybelle.

Aneurin: And we are all at Collingwood Children's Farm. [Tapping on wooden fence. In the background a farmer calls, “Myrtle!”] And it's Queer Out Here.

[The farmer calls Myrtle again and whistles, a young child speaks in a similar rhythm to the farmer. The birdsong grows louder. Another bleat. A voice comes faintly over a walkie-talkie: “Hey Bridget, did you get the chance to have a look at…” Sound fades out and in.]

Kermie: I turned around and walked into a goat who was right behind me and was all snuggly. [Goat scratching sounds, interrupted by a lumpy, throaty sound] That was a goat swallow. [More goat scritching, fade out.]
