The Story

Years later, the horizon looked different—less like a promise, more like a reckoning that had finally caught up. Garrick’s hair had gone wind-spent and slightly silver at the temples, the kind of gray you earn by outliving battles you weren’t supposed to. Lira wore her years quieter: new scar tracing under her left eye, braid threaded with small bone charms from beasts that only exist past the edge of maps. The Sunfall Expanse had been a rumor when they were younger, a red smudge on half-burned charts. Now it was the last unopened door in a world where most doors had already slammed shut behind them.

They didn’t walk into it as fresh heroes this time. They walked in as people who’d buried friends, broken oaths for better oaths, and learned that victory usually comes with paperwork in the form of ghosts. Behind them lay towns that remembered their names for the wrong reasons—too many saved, too many not, too many who thought legends are meant to stay polite and nearby. Ahead lay a desert that drank light at noon and poured it out again as mirages at dusk. The old banter had thinned into a kind of shorthand; a look from Lira could still redirect Garrick’s sword hand, and a grunt from Garrick could still tell her which shadow was lying.

The moment on the cover is their pause before the Expanse fully takes them—back to back, not because they fear what’s behind, but because they refuse to let time wedge them apart. The Sunfall wind moans through the mesas like a choir missing half its singers, and somewhere out there the twin relics they once chased are said to be awake again, pulsing like coals under the sand. They don’t talk about what they’ll find, because both of them know the Expanse doesn’t give you what you want—it gives you what you are. Garrick tightens his grip on a blade that’s been reforged twice since the last horizon. Lira nocks an arrow fletched in midnight blue. And when they step forward, it isn’t with the swagger of new adventurers, but with the hard, quiet certainty of two survivors choosing one more chapter on purpose.
