silver linings is a tune i penned on the seventh of eleven days of straight rain in the mountains of north carolina in 2018. this song is my anthem for uncomfortable transitions, for those moments you think, "my stars, it can't get any worse than it is right now," and then it does. but the reality of it all is, with every hurdle you are getting stronger, your reach gets farther, and you grow. so hold close your storm cloud silver linings.

in 2016, i was 19 and my baby brother was 13. i wrote this song as an assignment for a songwriting and poetry class i was taking my freshman year of college - it's all the advice i could possibly cram into 4 minutes and 3 verses for my little brother as he's grown.

this song holds a very special place in my heart - and will forever and always be dedicated to my twin, my mini, wyatt.

i came across a paraphrased quote wrongfully attributed to leonardo di vinci when i was a sophomore in college; "art is never finished, only abandoned."

after i graduated, i backpacked across europe for 34 days. in a musical instrument museum in belgium, i read the full quote by chemist antoine lavoisier, "nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed." 

he was talking about the law of conservation of mass, but those words moved me to write a song about feeling incomplete. never forget, we are art - and *everything* is transformed.

as september rears her head, and we are all reminded that sunshine and summer must come to an end, i figured a cover of this song might ease the transition. the hotelier is an amazing band i discovered in high school and have loved for a good while now. this song drips with nostalgia, and it was a pleasure to have the chance to put my spin on such an amazing tune.

before i met my love, a few titles of the "love songs" that i'd written included 'arsenic', 'heartburn', and 'matches'. love and i had a very complicated relationship and it seemed i'd equated cupid's touch with death and dismay for a long time. so when i met this really cute boy and things started moving towards a functional, healthy relationship - i found that i was almost *afraid* to write a love song about the situation. 

"ask anyone" is a nearly true story. before, i didn't write love songs because i hadn't found anyone who deserved them yet. now... well, just ask anyone. ;-)

I lived in Los Angeles for almost 2 years before moving back to the east coast. In that time, I had a conversation with some self proclaimed "Los Angelenos", in which they told me they didn't really know the exits they needed to take to get out of the city. That night I wrote the line "the folks in LA think the 405 exchange is where the world ends."

in the past, the very few love songs i've been inspired to write have utilized the metaphors of sickness and death a little too much to be considered *true* love songs. up til now, the words have just not come together for me. before, nobody had really done anything deserving of them. naturally, that means that i'm significantly out of practice as a songwriter attempting to write a love song - and this is the result!
