I was watching videos of the Pharoah Sanders concert a few days after the end of the recent We Out Here festival. He was evidently frail and unwell, perhaps even uncomfortable after not setting foot on stage for three years.  

However, even through a phone screen, you couldn't help but get goosebumps once he blew into the saxophone. His charizma, aura, and sheer emotion, as always, shining through. Sadly it was to be his last. The torchbearer of Coltrane's legacy and his one true heir, passed away just a few weeks later. 
  
Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas, Pharoah picked up the saxophone in his teenage years. He briefly moved to the West Coast to study art, before going to New York to take part in an exciting new jazz scene led by his idol, and later mentor, John Coltrane. Alongside Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler, he would become one of the most sought-after saxophonists in what was dubbed - avant-garde jazz. Pharoah Sanders joined Coltrane in 1965 and spent the next two years as his protege. After Trane's passing, he continued to take his music to new dimensions, furthering his journey into African and Eastern philosophies and eventually, becoming the face and driving force of what is now known as - spiritual jazz. 

From Alice Coltrane to Floating Points, Pharoah would collaborate with numerous musicians over the decades. However, for this tribute, I decided to focus on strictly his solo output and showcase the mastery of the albums he recorded for Impulse!, Strata East, and Theresa from the late sixties to the early eighties.

I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

We jumped at the opportunity, embracing the theme "Heavy Mellow" to curate a unique selection that showcases the seriously sublime soundscape of Hawaii's musical palette: new age and folk from the 1980s; psych from the 1970s; hip hop from the 1990s and 2000s; funk and soul from the 1970s. Rainer Trüby embraces the soul: "To know you, is to love you”. These verses, sung by Syreeta in Stevie Wonders song of the same name, are very well known. In 2008, Rainer Trüby and Danilo Plessow, better known under his MCDE moniker, fit them into a house-chassis layer. A funky bassline and their trademark raw drums push the track forward. Warm synthesizers and a spherical chord melody shyly flirt with each other in the background. A club hit in the year of its release, and its impact on a dancefloor can still be felt today.

 

"When I'm down and feelin 'sad, you always comfort me" sings Syreeta. This is what best describes Rainer Trüby as a DJ. Anyone who attended his club night “Root Down” in Freiburg – he has been running it for over 20 years now – knows: Rainer Trüby always comforts his audience and makes the dancers smile. For years, Rainer Trüby has focused on downbeat, Nujazz, drum’n’bass, broken beats and all kind of soul and disco from US-american, british and brazilian bands, singers and producers. Now he professionally brings together this knowledge of dance music’s roots with House and soulful Techno. Or Salsa and cheesy Pop songs, so-called guilty pleasure records, provided that the night and his audience are of the same mind.

 

As a DJ, Rainer Trüby has been and still is a regular at festivals like Worldwide Festival, founded and curated by Gilles Peterson. Clubs as Watergate or Panoramabar in Berlin trust in his musical repertoire. His main characteristic, regardless of being a DJ or working together with producers like Danilo Plessow aka MCDE ("Rainer Trueby"), Corrado Bucci ("Truccy") and Mario "Marlow" Weise ("Marlow & Trueby"), is: He embraces the soul.
