In this series our objective is not to bring you only big name DJ's but in fact we are focused on your resident DJ's, the life and soul of your local underground scene.

We aim to bring you regular mixes and interviews, to give you an insight into whats going on at events across the globe and what to expect when you attend.

One of our true passions is traveling the world to experience different clubs and different cultures and hope this podcast series inspires you to do the same.


Being based in Glasgow, Scotland we have decided to start close to home with in our opinion one of the coolest events in the city “Wax Works”

Hosted by a collective of true music lovers and vinyl enthusiasts which has built a following of the same, always a great atmosphere, everyone is there for the music, no snobbery just good people and good music.

The mix was recorded by resident Shaun Rutherford who has provided an awesome fast passed hypnotic techno selection which gives a good representation of what peak time sounds like at a Wax Works event!

Interview

How long has Wax Works been running?

Iain: We started Wax Works in November 2010, so 3 and a bit years.  It was
really just for Adam & I to play some records to our mates, but as we were
frustrated by the lack of artists we were into being booked, we decided to
try and change that.

Lovejoy: I only joined the boys early this year though, obviously to bring even more techno and sex appeal to the already scrumptious bunch!


Who is involved in the collective?

LJ: Iain 'Killa' Kerr, king of the projects, and Percy Street, The Brotherford, Adam and Shaun Rutherford, and myself obviously. 
Big Boab Hood and Marcel Dettmann were sniffing around looking for a call up but we had to patch them, too many cooks n' that..


How would you best describe the events musical preference?

LJ: Techno. In all forms. Each member has their own particular preferences but it all comes together in a maelstrom of musical mastery. TECHNO.

I: Definitely techno, but I think we all have our own unique styles that
can complement each other. We play a lot of other stuff too and we always try to ensure that there is a dedicated warm up at our nights. In Glasgow, it's so easy to just go for it from the start and people will be into it, but I don't think you're going to improve as a DJ and it doesn't force you to look for tunes that aren't so obvious. Anyone can pick out peak time tracks, but not everyone has an ear for stuff that will build the night from the ground up.


Could you tell us some of your previous bookings?

I: We've booked Eric Cloutier, John Osborn, Forward Strategy Group, Sigha,
James Ruskin, TVO, AnD, Steve Bicknell, Ness & Yourself.  Whilst we have
also booked MPIA3, Nick Hoppner, DJ Skirt, Rolando & Kassem Mosse with our friends Missing Persons Club.


Tell us one of your stand out moments since the event began?

LJ: James Ruskin's whole set from our last party was unbelievable, that guy knows what he's uptae! Another would have to be MPIA3's live set then Shaun and Killa after, the place was going absolutely nuts!
I: My standout moment as a promoter would have to be our party with Sigha, as this was the first time that everything really came together and felt like our hard work paid off.  Unfortunately, Chambre69 closed about 1 year ago and since then it's never really been the same. For me, at least.

S: The whole MPIA3 night was good, I enjoyed taking my 'tap aff' one more time in there before it shut and turned into whatever the fuck it is now..which is a shame because Chambre was slowly but surely becoming a powerhouse of Glasgow's underground scene.
 

What do you have planned for 2014?

I: We've decided not to book anymore guests for our parties.  The
ambivalence from the majority of Glasgow for contemporary techno artists
(excluding the superstars) begins to wane after a while and the sky high
costs of putting on the parties turns something that should be fun and
enjoyable into something that just seems like a chore.  It loses its
sparkle.  Plus, from all of the DJs that we've booked, I'm yet to see
someone that I think is better than us or have Stereo busier when it's just
us and our mates, so why do it?
It doesn't make sense.  The most fun part of doing this for all of us is
playing records, instead we're paying some artist to come and do that for
us.  Not anymore.

So, as for the actual plans, we'll be running a monthly party in Stereo
with only Wax Works DJs and our mates playing beginning on February 8th, so hopefully everyone reading this is up for it.  We are also playing some cool gigs in March & April, but we can't announce the artists we're warming up for yet and I'm sure that you will get to see us at a few after party events this year, which are almost always my favourite gigs.


What is your thoughts on the current underground scene in Glasgow?

LJ: There is so much going on every weekend in Glasgow it's brilliant, but, one downside is there's sometimes too much and you end up getting smaller crowds at things which should have bigger. Overall though I think the scene is quality, if only we had the licensing laws of Berlin we would be flying!

I: I wish it was different.

S: Like everything else, It has it's good and bad points. Occasionally, there are a few good nights on in a single weekend and it's hard to choose what to do or who to go and see, which is good in a sense but I wish more promoters would work together to avoid clashing nights. Pushing the kind of guy's were into though: Animal Farm, Missing Persons Club, CryptiQ, all the events at La Cheetah and the more alternative nights at Sleazy's.

LJ: I have recently become addicted to Chicago house so I'd have to say my top 5 at the moment are (in no particular order):
