Glasgow-based producer and INDEX:Records co-owner Conna Haraway unveils his debut solo release on Theory Therapy – 8 tracks of luminous electronics and restless textures too amorphous to be neatly categorised into a particular genre. Over 40+ minutes, the co:clear founder fuses dubbed-out illbient abstractions, voluminous low end and aquatic gurgles into unconventional analgesic soundscapes. The overall result is something immersive, visceral, and psychedelic – a fully-fledged sound that sits somewhere between delirium and bliss.

Lusidiq features 3 remixes by Seoul duo Salamanda, Philadelphia-based DJ and producer Opheliaxz, and Adam Dove, best known as sound artist Nexcyia.

Scores is a compilation exploring musical notations and how they can be interpreted as sounds. People have always tried to translate sonic expressions into visual cues that could be archived, passed down, and transformed back into music. 

From symbols to numbers, grids, staffs, figures or abstract shapes, several languages have been developed and continuously questioned to improve the ability to retain the emotion and meaning sounds can convey - what lies behind the veil.
 
What if this time, the notation would come beforehand?

The project unfolded in two phases. In the first one, visual artists from the Global URL Nation could propose one sheet of music score, free of interpretation. They were invited to play with musical notations and explore what it would even mean.

In the second phase, artists from GUN could pick one sheet and create a track trying to follow it as much as possible. It invited them to question music as a physical object, with its shapes, colors, textures and layers with the following :

__How is the overall composition? Are there any axis or lines that could be interpreted as a timeline or a melodic scale?
__How many discrete elements are in the image? How are they laid out?
__What are the shapes involved?  What is their scale? Do they have sharp or blurry outlines?
__What are the colors/textures used? How do they relate with each other in terms of tones, contrasts…?
__How are the different elements layered on top of each other? Are they superimposed or do they merge in some way?
__How would they translate them in musical terms, such as textures, notes, structures, timbres, rhythms, dynamics? 

It welcomed Bademjan, Baje Nunca, C+Vis, Capiuz, Clair X, C.T.A.A.M.  Ecovoron, Epiphagi, HeedLess, Mambo Kahn, migu, POL100, Yau Hei ASJ & Ziyiz for 14 tracks ranging from ethereal scorescapes to hyperstimulating scratches. Sounds and shapes weave together, blurring the boundaries between the two media to create one whole entity

“All The Gurls Were At The Women’s Archo Ashinto” is the new work by post-exoticist duo Babau, a project of Matteo Pennesi and Luigi Monteanni, both founders of Artetetra, a label and platform pursuing practice-based sound research on digital folklore and internet world music, which they term Quinto Mondo; a spin on Jon Hassel’s Fourth World. After releasing their own output on labels such as Discrepant, Communion and Artetetra and being selected as SHAPE+ alumni 2022/23, Babau is back on Bamboo Shows with a wild ride into the soundscapes of bootleg sound ethnography and floating world digi-exotica collages.

As part of the “Vai a casa, sei ubriaco!” series, Babau redraws the lines of stoner-impressionism and gonzo traveling through the rework of a radio show they produced for Psychic Radio. Born as a patchwork of imaginative sketches meshing YouTube audio manipulation with Babau’s signature live computer techniques, spirit box-like vocal excerpts and irregularly pulsing beats, “ATGWATWAA” explores the brain fog of transglobal exoticism offering a continuous, fake field recording where organologies and aural timbres conjure a floating world of sound flows and yet-to-come folk genres from yonder. If you’re here for a first-class ticket to mind trickery and surreally tender ‘cinema pour l’oreille’, no one does it better.

In particular, the title of the album comes from a shirt photographed by Babau in the streets which belongs to the phenomenon of SHANZAI clothing. Shanzhai (Chinese: 山寨; pinyin: shānzhài; Cantonese Jyutping: saan zaai) is a Chinese term literally meaning ‘mountain fortress’, the places where smugglers, rogues and thieves were imagined to reside, whose contemporary usage encompasses counterfeit, imitation, or parody products and events, as well as the subculture surrounding them. The term’s modern usage increased about 2008, when shanzhai smartphones achieved their peak domestic popularity.
Today, people associate the phrase with grassroots invention and ingenuity, rather than with deception or imitation. Similarly, Babau’s sonic vignettes talk of naive inconsistent societies and bootleg archipelagos, knock-off folk music and smuggled fragments of musics quilted into a feverish pseudo-regional repertoire. With “ATGWATWAA”, Babau coagulates its sonic weapons and tricks into a new narration leading the listeners to emerging landscapes and disappearing worlds made of magic pressurized air.

For this second edition, we welcome long-time collaborator Bademjan - a French artist blending heavily processed instruments with arcane atmospheres and raw emotions to unveil the sublime in their delicate intricacies.

For the project, he drew inspiration from early video game music, challenging 14 artists to collaboratively imagine the soundtrack of an ethereal, otherworldly video game. At the heart of the project is a collection of 25 custom-designed instruments – a unified palette of ambient washes, celestial leads, and weathered textures – that served as the exclusive sound source for the tracks, reminiscent of the creative limitations of the 16-bit era.

The result is a compilation of 14 tracks by Aeria, B E N N, commun des mortels, False Self, Guenter Råler, Indigoblue, jjjacob, Léo Dubois, Levier, Lukann, Peow Beow, Sçlé, Sioban and Sopoorific.

Each track feels like a gateway to its own unique realm, a portal to its own liminal space, where wistful melodies and haunting textures intertwine. While some tracks evoke a tender nostalgia, wrapping the listener in bitcrushed warmth, others explore darker, more mysterious tones – all coming together beautifully as an immersive journey through uncharted dreamscapes."

CEM has gained international notoriety over the past years for bewitching club and festival audiences alike with his feverish, polymorphic and richly referential DJ sets. For his debut full-length album, FORMA, the Berlin-based Herrensauna founder momentarily departs the dancefl oor, instead contributing a refl ective and at times menacing compositional study on terror and temporal anachronism for our perplexing times. All six pieces were originally commissioned to accompany Portuguese artist Mauro Ventura’s performative installation of the same name, shown fi rst at the Volksbühne in 2022; the work engaged notions of labor and repetition through a multiplicity of gestural and corporeal interventions. Featured prominently on FORMA are the sound of bells—doorbells, meditative bowls, farm cowbells, Shinto bells—a motif CEM distills repeatedly onto the record to presage and work through both the violent specter of order and discipline, as well as the reparative qualities of harmony and retreat.
Opening the album with poignant synths, granulated bell hits, and double bass string drones is “The Calling”, which summons listeners into a rattling and twisting soundscape that dichotomously channels alertness and serenity at once. “Bells Corrupt”, in turn, transforms the comforting chime of bells into an alarming and insistent pattern as it evolves in pitch and form, recalling the anxious fi lm grammar of Italian giallo legends Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento or Czech animator Jan Švankmajer. “An Industrial Satire” is conceived as an homage to experimentalist Limpe Fuchs, known for her Dadaist use of self-made, metallic instruments and strings. The second part of the piece takes a staggering turn with the addition of ghaita—a Northern Moroccan double reed horn with a series of holes—sampled from the Master Musicians of Joujouka’s collaborative 1971 album with Brian Jones and layered alongside CEM’s own percussion work. The horn elements—linked to the ancient fertility rites of Pan—here culminate in a melodic embodiment of panic and celebration. “Statue Garden” is a minimalist organ drone piece interlaced with fi eld recordings accumulated through the musician’s recent travels across East Asia. Its dexterous balance of stillness and depth provides a contemplative interlude amidst the album’s vigour. The album closes on a provocative note with “The Sincerity Test” that features Berlin-based Lithuanian performance artist Gertrūda Gilytė, whose wry spoken-word intervention mirrors the kind of grotesque, deluded ‘positive affirmations’ that abounds on social media, suggesting a relatedness between narcissistic online speak and the rise of reactionary politics.

CEM is no stranger to the ever-threatening past and present of fascism, having been raised in Vienna within a Turkish-Kurdish immigrant household. FORMA thus emerges as a militant sonic offering and, through its razor-sharp interweaving of atmosphere and texture, conjures a fractured, albeit elegiac, space of possibility wherein time is out of joint and the circular motion of history with a capital H is dizzyingly thrown into disarray. As our world rushes forward into the past, casting dissonant spells might turn out to be our last rempart.
