Both based in Bristol, @djpolo-uk and @nkc have held down a joint show on the city’s newly inaugurated station SWU FM since November 2020. The show found the sweet spot between their sounds, with NKC’s penchant for gritty, mechanoid percussion meshing with DJ Polo’s love for the more soulful, technicolour side of drum-focused club music.

With venues finally reopening in the summer, Polo and NKC launched their clubnight SteamRooms at the Crofters Rights in Bristol in September. The party spotlights both established and upcoming artists pushing the syncopated bounce forwards in UK dance music, featuring Scratchclart and AYAYA for the first instalment.

ETS-YEYEYEYE came about through this ongoing collaboration. The tracks take hybrid influence from the genres and subgenres that DJ Polo and NKC spin on their radio show and at SteamRooms – UK funky, hard drum, tribal house, gqom, amapiano – without slotting straightforwardly into any of them. Both are focused on maximum dancefloor impact: concrete percussion linked up with dramatic builds and wild sound design. ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah’ became the collab mantra, progressively abbreviated and sped up to ‘yeyeyeye’ as they hit on more unruly ideas.

Tommy Garofalo aka Turbojazz, Italian dj and producer with great versatility, started DJing and producing music during the 00s heavily inspiried by Hip Hop. Something that would bring him to explore the whole black music culture, from dance floor jazz to rare funk and disco, passing through all things soulful and deep. Take all of the above stir it in a musical pot and you get “Unbreakable EP”, the debut 12” on Local Talk from Turbojazz that features “Please U” feat. David Blank. with the remix of EVM128, and the acclaimed "Unicorn Rising” which received the like of Laurent Garnier, Volcov, DJ Deep, Luke Solomon, Lefto, Ashley Beedle, Shur-i-Kan and Lorca just to name a few.

Straight away “Please U” has been also selected by Crookers for his “Defected in Croatia” compilation and this made Tommy ready for his next releases on labels like: BBE, GAMM, CT-HI and of course LOCAL TALK.

Turbojazz @ Chicago Calling #078 - Italy

In the last couple of years, London's SHERELLE (@iamsherelle)has torn through the dance music world like a tornado. Everything she does is high speed and high impact, from what she mixes to the way she mixes it. Her dizzying mix of footwork, jungle and drum & bass has breathed new life into the 160bpm scene and got people all over Europe in a spin. As well as solo work, she plays as part of the 6 Figure Gang and runs the Hooversound Recordings label with Naina while also championing all things leftfield on her BBC Radio 1 residency. 

Of course, her 80 minute mix for us is pure fire, a bumping ride through thrilling kick patterns, shimmering toms and drilling bass. It's underpinned with a constant sense of tension that keeps you utterly on the edge of your seat and variously explodes into life, or pulls back to a moment of unsettling calm. It tells the story of a rich history of UK music, but with a fresh perspective that makes it all the more vital.

Banoffee Pies Records 15th Original Series release comes from Cassius Select. Canadian born producer Lavurn Lee, now residing in his home city of Hong Kong, drops his latest solo EP “Heavyweight”. His unique style and selective output has drawn our attention for some time. This release does exactly what it says on the tin. With previous appearances on the likes of Matthew Herbert's Accidental JNR., Hypercolour and more, he has maintained a primary focus on rhythmic structures, alienated textures and eerie vocalisations that flaunt a strong influence and appreciation for UK techno, Hip Hop, Garage, and all things Broken Beat. 

The release kicks off with “Born To Defence”, a mood setter scattered with punchy drum rolls and wild toms that set the tone for a harmonic palette across the 4 tracks. The A2 “Honda Civic” displays a tougher edge using a hybrid of sound. Pulsing late night business - Hatchback style. “Sicko Groove” gets the B side off the ground with a chest rattling, Grime inspired club track, sliding further up the weight divisions before things close off with “Guia Circuit”, a more techy low end tool with notable energy shifts. BP015 sustains stripped back but relentless percussion throughout. “The Original Circuit Training Soundtrack”. Love BP x
