A thin chord, sharp and grainy, like a harpsichord forgotten in a dusty attic—this is the sound that brings us into the closing track of hwut, the latest handful of tunes by RYV, aka Charlie Abbott. Throughout the record’s densely compact journey, we continually encounter these subtle pops and sizzles, disembodied mutterings, and distorted gasps for air, as if walking through an atmosphere where something is wrong—where sounds are out of place, searching for each other and the place where they might have come from. But this is where RYV’s music thrives: auditory uncertainty mixed with relief, sonic surprises among waves of bliss. Transducing tinkling glitches into swirling rhythms and tonal planes, the young producer dots his aural landscape with sounds both momentary and expansive, frenetic and slowly evolving. The sounds do come together in the end, compelling us to return with them, again and again.

A Sol Mechanic’s newest EP “just pick me up” solidifies his evolution from beatmaker to producer-vocalist as he ties together blissed-out productions with achingly soulful vocals. David Blazer, the man behind A Sol Mechanic, has garnered a formidable reputation on Soundcloud for his west-coast inspired beats that are as emotionally charged as they are hard-hitting. Featuring a collaboration with label-mate Novelty Daughter,  the “just pick me up” EP is a sign of the sun-drenched sounds to come from the prolific A Sol Mechanic.

"The album was recorded in 3 consecutive days in which we just jammed - hence the name of the album - JAM - and was the initiative of Harake - a project of Kol HaCampus 106fm radio.

The general idea was to get into the studio, without any songs in advance, and jam using our equipment and some extra instruments to create a live album.

The result is a collection of intuitive tracks all made on the spot, very different from the trio's usual work process - in layers and over time.

Thanks to this process, the tracks got a dynamic living character that compliments the electronic format, giving the album its unique colour.

The sessions got an unexpected twist due to the November 2012 bombings in Israel/Palestine. Alarms that set off at peak moments got us all into a very specific zone which gave birth to some of the songs - Master Of Rockets, I Cried, What Is Madness are among its' children.

Track taken from the upcoming album Pete Josef - 'Colour Remixed' out April 21st.

The release of Colour brought Pete Josef to the attention of some much-respected fellow artists, and none more so than 2009 Mercury award winner, Speech Debelle.  Responding to the effervescent energy of the album’s title track, Speech apparently penned her inspired verse whilst listening to ‘Colour’ at the beach.  Her mercurial spoken word graces the intro of this edit with a swing and a swagger only a rapper of her caliber could muster.  She references religion, philosophy and the natural world in a verse that builds in intensity to introduce the by-now familiar opening ‘Ooh’s’ of this snapshot of the joys of living in a Technicolor world.

The 8-piece, Brooklyn-based band formed in early 2009 and, after a slew of dates around NYC, recorded their debut 7” single and EP, Hard Steppin', at Dunham Studios (home of Menahan Street Band, Budos Band, Charles Bradley and more).
