Waking Dream

Funk was the syncopated groove that emerged in the mid-sixties through hits from James Brown and Dyke and The Blazers. It was a natural development out of rhythm and blues. Thousands of local bands tried to emulate Brown’s success, and in the process created a plethora of rare and sought after 45s and album cuts that have been mined by DJs and producers to fill floors or provide breakbeats. Whilst the 20 tracks on this compilation would cost you thousands of pounds to own on their original issue, that isn’t really the point. Instead you get to listen to magnificent grooves such as Mickey & The Soul Generations explosive ‘Iron Leg’, Andrew Brown’s blues tinged ‘You Made Me Suffer’ or the message music of 24 Carat Black.

On the 14th October 2016 J&D Records release three exceptional compilations that look at vintage African-American music through the prism of UK club culture. All Night Long, Can You Feel ThatBeat and Extra Added Soul will be available on CD & double vinyl and are compiled by DJ and award winning compiler Dean Rudland, with stunning artwork from his long-time collaborators The Unknown. Across the three volumes there are 60 tracks of soul, funk and boogie.

Info: After one and a half decade and more than 400 releases, Compost Records bundles some of their finest tunes as Various Artists digital download compilation albums. The variety and full spectrum of Compost’s repertoire has never or rarely been presented in form of a musical genre compilation. These releases will be compiled or DJ-mixed by Compost’s artists and are available as digital downloads, except in some rare cases very very limited as 500 CDs.

Ever since the beginning of electronic music the voice was considered an instrument that shouldn’t be forgotten. So when everybody considered the beats and the bass as the King, there was still love for vocals. Sometimes to create an atmosphere of tribalism with its own mantras, sometimes as a work of poetry. But always present.

From the depths of the Compost vaults vocal tracks were selected and mixed by Rupert & Mennert. Compost and Rupert & Mennert are more than proud to present two shining examples of all the great songs that were sung and produced in the last two decades.

Could one say that this particular ‘Compost Selection’ defines a genre? Well... not entirely. Do all the great vocalists that sang on an immense amount of Compost releases deserve their own spotlight? Well... hell yes!

The first take has the appropriate sub-title: Brothers.

On this very compilation, fourteen tracks are selected and mixed together. With vocal contributions by Robert Owens, Victor Davies, Colonel Red, Marc Frank, Joseph Malik, Ovasoul 7, Jamie Lloyd, Ernesto and many more. The tracks will go back and forth through all kinds of genres. From the deep folk electronic of Zwicker , the latin-jazz by Intuit and the spoken word by General Electrics to the beats by Wagon Cookin’, Daniel Magg, Phreek Plus One and TJ Kong & Nuno dos Santos. Giving you post broken beats by Beanfield and Kyoto Jazz Massive. Ending with some classic crooning from Les Gammas and funky soul by Muallem and Alex Attias.

Guts, a producer exiled in Ibiza, and Mambo, a Los-Angeles-based painter, have been lounging on the shore with the sound of the waves lapping in the background as they sift through the vinyl for their Beach Diggin’ collection. Far, far from the mouldy-smelling, lightless cellars where record hunters usually hang out. Diggin’ disks as others dig beaches, because getting your hands on a good vinyl, its grooves virtually unexplored, is like stumbling on a dazzling expanse of virgin sand.
Guts and Mambo have little time for the idea that Brazilians have to play bossa nova, Cubans must salsa and a Jamaican has to be into reggae. They sniff around the blind spots away from the beaches packed with noisy tourists and come up with Italians who beat out Afro rhythms, West Indians who lay down earth-shaking dub beats, and Trinidadians who unleash funk laced with lots of brass. Not to mention Peruvians, Frenchies and even Spaniards who can recreate the atmosphere of a humid, totally torrid sixties Rio party.
On the seafront, Guts and Mambo have put together a 16-track playlist that is hip without being elitist, guided by the highest standards and unwavering principles of sun, escapism, the good life and nothing below 25°C.
Seventeen tracks are stamped on the pages of the record’s passport - boss nova, soul, jazz, latin, afro-funk and tropical -, souvenirs of travels through North and Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean islands.
Intoxicating tunes, radiant rhythms, velveteen vocals: Beach Diggin’ is for sipping through a straw, wiggling your hips and shaking your pelvis to, and it’s made to bring bodies into friction.
