Can You Hear Me Now

A few years ago my sister-in-law called. Her mother was coming to town and liked Old Fashions. Knowing I had once been a mildly-noted mixologist with a penchant for making the classic drinks – the Martini, Sazerac, Mint Julep, Manhattan,  and…the Old Fashion – she asked for my recipe. I tried to give it over the phone, but she got confused so asked me to email it to her.

This is what I wrote to her:

Note: I stole a few lines from the great Frank Sinatra song Angel Eyes, from his For Only the Lonely album, the one he recorded after Ava Gardner broke his heart, having him traipsing all across the world following her, making a fool of himself. I suppose I would do the same thing for the raven-headed North Carolina beauty with the green eyes…Ava Gardner…OOOOO LA LA….

orange and cherry
muddled like grapes in a vat,
ice as pristine as a mountain cap,
Angostora and Pechaud's --
three bitter dashes -- each,
3 ounces of Kentucky's finest,
or Canada's Crown blend
colored like a minted penny,
sugar and water -- a simple syrup
near to the brim,
a splash of Grenadine
creates the overall color
of a whiskey sunset --
Sinatra on stereo
for Only the Lonely,
his voice like the whiskey --
dark and biting
he carries the torch --
Angel Eyes cues...
"drink up, all you happy people...."
the glass comes to lip
"order anything you please...."
the palette awaits the first sip 
ice cold, cubes clinking...
(is there anything better than the first nip?)
"the laughs and the drinks are on me..."
the night is clear
" 'scuse me....while I…dis--ah--pear...."
