Si Thompson - Hardcore & Jungle Mix Part 2 (19-3-2025)

Earlier this week, I was reading a thread about hardcore tracks that really make people emotional, and it got me thinking. At the time, I happened to be listening to possibly my favourite happy hardcore track of recent times, the incredible "Chasing the Sun" by Jakka-B with Fracus & Darwin on the remix. There are tracks from the hardcore scene that have made me introspective, made me cry, made me sing with joy at the top of my lungs, and when I considered it, I don't think I'd ever done a vocal happy hardcore mix.

So, I went back over the last 20 years or so, found my favourites that mean something special to me. That brought back memories from what I call my second stage of hardcore raving in the mid 2000s, along with some from the early 2010s, and of course I had to include the latest track from Jakka-B, Fracus & Darwin too. As I expected, Gammer and Darren Styles were to feature heavily here heh, so respect to them!

I decided to think of this like a mixtape / mix CD to my wife and friends, and those I care about.

So here's possibly my first and last vocal hardcore mix, sent with love. I hope it brings you happiness, no matter if you're singing in the car, in the shower, or just mouthing the songs under your breath with a smile on your face while on your packed train home from work. I hope one day we get to sing these together on the dancefloor. Enjoy.

London Massive

Just Another Label (JAL) was one of the original hardcore labels to cross over the boundaries between hardcore and jungle back in 1993 and gained great stature in the underground UK dance scene. The label effectively blended rolling basslines and junglistic breaks, occasionally on a darker tip with dreamy pianos and soft female vocals, creating memorable tracks such as 'Above The Clouds', 'Trippin' On Sunshine', 'Funky Sensation' and Justin Time's brilliant 'Sweet In Pocket'. The label progressed towards the later, more recognised happy hardcore sound of 1995 and unleashed arguably one of old skool hero, Billy 'Daniel' Bunter's greatest ever releases, 'Let It Lift You'. With it's infectious breaks, off key stabs, and super uplifting vocals, this is often echoed as one of the labels best selling releases. But, my personal favourite track from this exceptional hardcore label is BDB's piano driven masterpiece 'New Sensation'. From the moment I first heard this record in 1995 on Just 4 U's 'Hardcore Happiness Vol 2' cassette, it has never lost it's power. It's still to me, one of those special tracks that never gives in. Sheer brilliance from Bunter and this incredible label.

Another sub label owned by the mighty Basement Records, Homegrown Records was launched to cater for tracks leaning towards the happier side of hardcore. Still possessing some of the darker, 'Jungle Tekno' sounds in the initial releases, the label seems to have the perfect blend of dark and light, which made Hardcore music so popular at raves in the early nineties. Undeniably, Homegrown released some of the greatest, early four-to-the-floor Happy Hardcore tracks which were big favourites with the likes of DJ's Dougal, Sy and Slipmatt. 'DJ's Unknown - Volume 1' being one of their most played records at the time. A massive anthem with highly recognisable samples, an eerie, yet uplifting piano and dreamlike strings. These characteristics continue throughout the following releases and are notable influences on most Sy & Unknown tracks due to DJ Unknown's heavy involvement in the label, taking control of the reigns in 1995. There was even an early rare breakbeat release from Scottish Bouncy Techno kings Scott Brown and Marc Smith, which frequently and unjustly goes under the radar.

Homegrown Records is a fantastic, somewhat emotional, sought-after Hardcore label. For me, it delivered.....BIG TIME!
