The Savage Bull, by radio artist Bernard Clarke has been shortlisted under the New Radio Formats category for a Prix Italia Golden Award. The New Radio Formats award is in its first year as a prize category and is is being awarded to the most innovative, unconventional, groundbreaking, daring and bold radio/audio format, including web native radio and audio offers, with no limit of genre, platform, length, produced with or without the support of archive material.

Established in 1948 by Italain national broadcaster RAI, The Prix Italia Awards are the oldest and most prestigious international competition for the promotion of quality, innovation and creativity in the media and garner entries from radio, TV, and digital media outlets in 87 countries all over the globe. To be shortlisted for the new avant-garde award in its first year is a huge honour. But it's no surprise to followers of radio art and sound art in Ireland and internationally, among whom Bernard Clarke's fascinating work has been a gaining  a wide and appreciative listenership in recent years.

We have been proud to feature Bernard's work on a  number of occasions on The Bogman's Cannon and, when he heard about his nomination were eager to get him to tell us the ideas behind the Savage Bull. Bernard also kindly shared a number of extracts for us to pass on.

Despite the predictably adoring reception of fans and the equally predictable rave reviews in the corporate literary press in the UK and USA, Jonathan Franzen's new novel Purity is a substandard novel, in no way worthy of comparision to the great realist novelists of the past of the grand American novelists of the present. Here Dave Lordan of Bogmanscannon.com discusses why he is so disappointed with 'Purity' on RTE Arena with Sean Rocks.

Muck Savage by Dave Lordan

New Zealand union UNITE organises among the most vulnerable workers in fast food restaurants, casinos, call centres and the like. Although small, the union is highly active and it has a had a major impact on national politics in New Zealand through victories in all out strikes on the minimum wage and, lately, against Zero Hours Contracts. Well known Irish socialist Joe Carolan went to New Zealand in 2005 and shortly afterwards became involved as a n organiser with UNITE. Here I speak to Joe about the tactics which won such important victories and about his opinions about how the Irish Union movement should take on similar pressing issue for working class here. It’s the only show focusing on spoken word in Ireland, as well as on related & cross-over artforms past & present.
It takes three or four days work to make a decent show, at least. At the moment this is voluntary work. I can do about six episodes, hopefully, on a voluntary basis.
I’d love to do far more than that tho, & with community support that would be possible.
I’ll be launching a fundraising drive after easter to help support my community oriented work in radio/podcast, video & streaming, writing & performing.
