I used some plug-ins in my library that I either forgot I had or haven't used in a long while. Creating something out of the sounds I randomly chose.

For this track I used a few different water samples that I happened to find on my computer. The somewhat descriptive names of the files were: Single Wave, Water Pen Plop, Drips of Water Fall onto China, Lake Water Loop, Ocean 1, Butler Drowns, Water Pour in Metal Bucket, Water from Sink, Water Pour Glass, Water Pour Pan and Swimming.

I used varying clips from each of these, arranged them and ran them through LOTS of processing. Different verbs and delays, glitch tones, pitch shifters and limiters. Stir it all up, and this is what I got.

I most recently bought a couple of plug-in instruments from Rhythmic Robot Audio. They make cool synths and weird little instruments. Check them out - https://www.rhythmicrobot.com/.

In this track I used a Hurdy Gurdy, because I love the drones and the sounds of the keys engaging, and the Haunted Piano. Both happen to have a delay setting that is delightfully imprecise but also sounds really cool. I tried to figure out what would sound cool and what would give me great happy accidents. The beat that oscillates left to right is from the hurdy gurdy and I think it contrasts nicely with the piano.

All sounds from those two plug-ins with a little bit of verb, some EQ and gentle mastering.

I just recorded a voice over for a work project with a person who had lots of mouth clicks when speaking. I'm always amazed at what a de-clicking plug-in can do, and love the "only play removed clicks" option.

So for this project, I took a minute long clip of just the clicks of the voice over. Then I layered 35 instances of this track on top of itself in random intervals. This is what you hear at the beginning of the track.

Next I took the mix down of those 35 tracks and layered that on top of itself another 35 times, but now constrained to short rhythmic intervals, which created a lovely noise track that ebbs and flows.

Next, I ran the result through a few different presets on Stutter Edit.

Lastly, I mixed everything together into one cohesive track that maybe resembles something like music.

But mostly I loved creating something out of (almost) nothing. :)

I first tried to create a track out of some sound recordings I had, but that didn't work out so well. So I re-did the project with eight notes and then substituted as directed.  From there I shuffled things around and built it into a track. You can hear the original four notes and the first variation at the beginning. The only thing left from my sound recordings are the crickets and the beginning and the rain at the end. :)

To start with I wrote a simple chord progression on a piano synth pad. I then played this through my little bluetooth speaker. I started losing signal pretty much immediately because the computer couldn't send audio fast enough. Recorded those glitches with my handheld recorder, and also experimented with decreasing buffer size and increasing distance. Fed all those recordings back into my DAW and chopped them up. Kept the most interesting and glitchy-est parts.

Then I started arranging all the pieces in time. Everything you hear is using those recordings as their source material except for the dulcimer that floats in and out. I used two instances of Glitchmachine's Polygon plug-in to create the low beat and the organ sound. All other sounds are the result of chopping up my source audio recordings.

I like that this turned into a cool meditative track while keeping the feeling that it could drop out any second.

The text is pulled from a New York Times article on queer pride. While we have made many strides toward equality, there are many queer people who are still marginalized, in danger and are not "surfing the rainbow wave". These include trans* people and queer people of color. These groups were instrumental in the Stonewall uprising. Let us not forget their struggles!

All sounds are created from the original voice recording. I chopped up the audio, reversed it, ran it through a granulator, took some parts and laid them out on a synth for the rhythmic parts and then put them all back together.

I used the recording of loons as my base, which also defined the length of the track. I then added sounds of grizzly bears (the hissing, growling, etc.) and of a red squirrel (the buzzy chattering).
To add the alien idea, I used a synth line I was working on earlier today, and recorded and mangled my voice "reporting" back on the strange things this alien had seen. I assumed they could only transmit information in a musical context, so all field recordings have to be wrapped into musical form for the home planet to understand.

I decided to use a few Halloween themed plug-ins that I recently picked up and experiment with the sounds I could create. Not a lot of processing here, only tweaks in the plug-ins themselves.
