Martin Vice & Iboga label head Michael Banel joined forces in 2014 to form a new DJ / Production concept. Their self titled collaboration MVMB delivers a slick and original new sound that effortlessly explores the boundaries between techno and progressive psy-trance. The duo are able to perform two kinds of sets, one oriented towards techno and one towards progressive trance.

The Christian rock bard Larry Norman gazes to the sky, looking for a messianic spaceman, the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith encounters his own otherworldly apparition and the mysterious Golden Plates near Canandaigua Road… a professional bird-whistler gets in touch with Jesus before the foot-stomping gospel of Myrna Summers… there is the smooth piano of televangelist Jimmy Swaggart and the Holy Spirit grooves of Tammy Faye Bakker, both walking a trail blazed by health-and-wealth pastor Oral Roberts who sees money in our wallet at this very moment… and, before launching the Nuwaubian Nation of Moors and constructing his pyramid compound in Georgia, Dr. Malachi Z. York made these get-on-the-floor dance tunes… 

The Search Party plays the plaintive sounds of Christian psychedelia… Bob Larson, a demon exorcist, strums the guitar while Yosef Ben-Jochannan reveals occult symbols in the Nile Valley and the Satanic Panic comedian Mike Warnke does knee-slapping standup… the ethereal tunes of Aeoliah point inward, astrologists point to the stars and the stadium rock of Blue Aquarius points to the adoration of Guru Maharaj Ji… Jesus Freak rockers Newbury Park see a new day dawning and Gawain Shakti sees a New Age manifesting… the San Francisco hippies of the Sufi Choir sing of the soul, the Chabad Choir sing a wordless niggun and the Hare Krishna poet Hansadutta Swami sings a warbling devotional… Finally, Richard Hittleman, yogi and TV entrepreneur, closes out the hour with a therapeutic exhortation: practice, practice, practice!

She is also a music selector and co-founder of the collectives Cercle Sonor and Fase REM, dedicated to deep listening and the promotion of experimental music on her native island, Mallorca.

Dreaming awake at the end of time.

For this mix, I have curated a collection of recent favorites inspired by the concept and sounds of the label: a selection of ambient and experimental electronic music, with sonic nuances ranging from new age, leftfield, spoken word, through musique concrète, abstract, minimal, or sound collage, and even including more pop or rock sounds.

An interpretation of what could be the sonic landscape we traverse in our transition between sleep and wakefulness, from the hypnagogic zone to the REM phase. A space-time continuum where the world and time seem to pause, revealing the voices and images of our deepest fears and desires. A journey that spans from the most private dreams to the possibility of collective dreaming.

The title of the mix comes from a lecture by the polymath and psychonaut Terence McKenna, which has also served as the starting point for this mixtape:

It's not the black side. It’s not the white side. It's the interface. It's the edge. “While sleeping, watch”. And I've noticed that, while going to sleep, there is a barrier, a place in the process of going to sleep, that is like a mercurial edge. It’s a river. It's a zone of hypnagogia. You often pass through it post orgasm. It's a place of drifting, amoeboid, colored after-image lights, and then: true hallucination. Images. Strange, transcendental, or transpersonal images.

https://soundcloud.com/mattxavier has been a friend of mine for many years now. A fellow music obsessive and trusted voice when it comes to all things ambient, techno, and beyond, we finally managed to meet in person while I lived in Los Angeles, and we stayed connected over music ever since. 

We’ve swapped stories about pressing vinyl and running labels, and he was the reason I first crossed paths with Joel Mull (Damm) at one of his gatherings held at a beautiful Topanga home. It was a serendipitous moment that still echoes today. 

A proponent for the deeper layers found in music, Matt has since become a practician, ambassador, and pioneer for psychedelic soundtracking. Along the way, he shared tracks from ASIP and other labels that were influencing and guiding his private sessions, shaping the grand masterpiece we present to you today. As his practice deepened, we exchanged many texts discussing his ambition to publish a book about his unique experience and include an accompanying mix on ASIP. 

Matt’s new book, ‘The Psychedelic DJ: A Practical Guide to Therapeutic Music Curation and Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy’, (https://a.co/d/5bFxc2h) is a groundbreaking manual for anyone looking to bridge sound and healing.
