Gazing out the classroom window, writing poetry on the glass
Always hid behind in the recess line knowing full well that I’d be picked last
And while everyone else competed to be Queen of the Prom and Captain of Football
I would often eat my lunch alone safe within the walls of a bathroom stall

They said I was a sappy joke
A prince with no Snow White who woke
Overweight and under heard
No one heeded my words
They made fun of how I talked
The lack of swagger in my walk
The way my gestures made the girls balk

They gave me all these rules
But I never could follow them anyway
They wanted black or white
But God created me in shades of grey
And I spent a thousand lifetimes trying to make a heaven out of this hell

And then I learned how to speak to them, graduating first in my class in Mass Comm
Got a J.D. and then I set out to see if I could use the law to right the world’s wrongs

And I billed those hours, made it rain
So they never could complain
Clawed my way up to the top
Senior partner - next stop
Then they said “Censor your songs
Go get jabbed and move along”
And nothing ever felt so wrong

So I said, “To hell with all their rules”
I always seemed to break them all anyway
They demanded black or white
But I was rocking my shades of grey
And I spent a thousand lifetimes trying to make heaven out of their hell
And once I broke free from their reality I could no longer be expelled
I was the Outsider
2020, stolen choice
That’s when I finally found my voice
Earned my wings and I took flight
Recharged, ready to fight
Now feds and foes battle to see
Who can control the words I speak
Knowing my voice shapes reality

So I’m making my own rules now that I am unshackled and free
And the truth’s not black or white, instead I found it etched in emerald green
And now the voices of messengers past are echoing through my mind
Reminding me the keys to my reality are now for others to find
