Terrain Instruments Are Activated

Windribbon 2 is a long brass strip 0.8 mm thick and 1 cm wide, stretched taut between two trees. As its name suggests, the wind makes the Windribbon vibrate. The brass ribbon is far more sensitive to the wind than a string or wire. Rain, snow and acoustic vibrations also make the Windribbon move. Its vibrations are captured by contact microphones and amplified through a speaker. The installation in Belgium's Klankenbos Sound Forest is a replica of the original Windribbon that the artist, Leif Brush, made in his back yard in 1975 (image left). Leif(USA) is a pioneer of sound art with a fascination for nature. He studied and taught his Audible Constructs  class art at the School of the Arts Institute in Chicago- 1969-1972.

Leif segued his digital "soundworks" in 2003.

	80-year-old Leif Brush is a sound art pioneer. "His fascination with nature led him to the hidden sounds of flora and natural elements. Trees and wind became his Terrain Instruments. His spacious garden was gradually transformed into an artist studio. Guy De Bièvre and k Sofia Von Bustorff met with Brush in Duluth, Minnesota.  Their extensive interviews and digital audio tapes form the basis for an audiovisual space in which the work of Brush can be discovered.  Moreover, for the first time in nearly 30 years, they are reinstalling two Terrain Instruments: Windribbon and Insect Recording Studio."
