One of the most accomplished and revered producers in electronic music today makes his solo debut on Kompakt: French mastermind AGORIA joins our release fold after a foretaste with his stellar 2013 remix of Michael Mayer's "Good Times" (KOMPAKT 272), presenting us with his new mesmerizing floor epic BAPTÊME. 

"I'm very happy that BAPTÊME will finally be released", says the producer, hinting at the track's long and winding path to completion: "it's a very special tune for me, representing a lot of changes in my personal life these last two years. It signals my 'second life', if you will". Meaning "baptism" in French, the cut's title is indeed a perfect fit for its particularly festive spirit, exuding both solemnity and sheer pleasure, hallmarks of AGORIA's unique brand of emotional and versatile techno. Bouncy, minimalist percussion is joined by an extensive, dub-styled sub-bass and floating shards of atmospheric synths, quickly escalating into a high definition mover fitted with gorgeous swabs of piano and a keen sense for emotional space.  

On the flipside, the original track gets a fascinating rework from DJ Tennis and The Rapture's Luke Jenner, whose LUCKY BLUE EYES VERSION adds more wiggle room to the proceedings, bolstering its loosened grip with enticing new vocals. In yet another step forward, AGORIA himself revisits the remix, sharpening its blurry edges and successfully putting the vocals to work in a prime time environment: "my friend Patrice Bardot - the chief editor of Tsugi Magazine - even said that this one sounds like The Doors for the 21st century", he adds - and indeed, it's next level dreaming for those who need a little bit more from their floor than just another knock on the head.

For our final record of the year, we turn to Glasgow's man of the year - Denis Sulta.

Like a good chunk of the Numbers family, he has earnt his stripes working at the coalface of techno aka Rubadub. He has crafted two excellent twelves for our bare-chested cousins at Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and is beginning to carve himself out a reputation as a DJ of some repute, expertly blending in the bangers with Sulta-certified weirdness. Denis is part of a new wave of Glaswegian artists who are doing amazing things and whose music is continuously exciting us.

‘It’s Only Real’ created by Sulta during a burst of inspiration one Sunday, takes us back to a time when techno was intricately melodic but still kicked hard in the club. Made with only the purest of intentions and a dedication to the art of moving heads and feet.

After a short while finely tuning the sample-based house and disco ReGraded sub-label, Midland reopens the doors to his original Graded imprint with a release that's well worth shouting about. Catalogue number #003 comes in the form of three-track Blush EP, with an opening title track that highlighted Midland's own BR set at Dekmantel last summer. In February 2016 Midland made his contribution to the hugely influential BBC Essential Mix series. The end of the mix came in the shape of an unreleased track that would go on to soundtrack dance floors and festivals the world over. That track was 'Final Credits.' Since its creation in the depths of winter to its vinyl release in June, with weekly airings everywhere from Panorama Bar to DC10 to Dekmantel Festival, the record has united dance floors and become one of the most unlikely tracks of the year. As the summer disappeared, calls for a full release of 'Final Credits' have swelled, and now, thanks to The Classic Music Company we're delighted to say this is becoming a reality.

‘Word of Mouth’ is the October released debut album from the tireless Leftroom Records boss and 
producer/DJ, Matt Tolfrey.

Featuring a rich selection of talent, from the relatively new such as James Teej, Jem Cooke and 
Kevin Knapp, to legends like Marshall Jefferson and Ya Kid K, ‘Word Of Mouth’ is a return to the feel 
of classic house albums of old where collaborations with vocalists, engineers and mix engineers 
were worn as a badge of honour.

Matt Tolfrey is a fixture of modern house music that can feel a definite sense of pride over his 
achievements. Once a young upstart who was championed by DJs as diverse as Craig Richards 
and Pete Tong, he’s now a mentor to many via his various Leftroom imprints while still retaining the 
obsessive and energetic enthusiasm for music and it’s machinations.

A recording artist who has released on Cocoon, Rekids, Crosstown Rebels, Saved, Culprit and 
more, Tolfrey’s touch in the studio is undoubted but with ‘Word of Mouth’ we’re treated to a unique 
insight into his influences, working methods and what makes him tick. 
'I cannot play the piano and I am not professionally trained in any way musically, but through years 
of DJing I know exactly what I like, and I have great tracks in my head that need to get out. While 
searching the Internet for alternate ideas of making music, I came across some amazing software 
that enables you to simply sing or hum into a mic, which then translates into midi notes, which you 
then use as the basis of your tracks. In essence, it means that while I am walking the streets, or 
away travelling, and I come up with an idea for a bassline, or a melody, I can simply record it into my 
phone, return home, and sing it into the computer. In other words, ‘in theory’ the album is mainly 
going to be written with my mouth, not my fingers, and then fully realised with the help of engineers 
and guest vocalists - hence the name ‘Word Of Mouth’.

From opening cut ‘Encarta’, it’s obvious that ‘Word of Mouth’ is Tolfrey wearing his influences 
proudly. Any fans of 1990s deep house can feel the soul of classic British deep house imprints like 
Paper and DIY Discs (the latter notable as a heavy presence in Tolfrey’s beloved Nottingham during 
his University years), albeit with subtle and respectful modern twists.

Dubbed in places (‘The Truth’ with Marshall Jefferson), electronic in some (‘Never Assume’ with 
James Teej) and direct in others (‘The Spooks’ with Kevin Knapp packs a real, penultimate-trackpunch), 
‘Word Of Mouth’s continuing theme is elegantly employed melodies regardless of tone. A 
listen that drags you through from opener to the sublime, broken closer (‘Not So Little’ feat Kevin 
Knapp), ‘Word of Mouth’ is a mature, masterful debut from a cherished UK talent.
