In 1979, a fire tore through a small underground recording studio on the outskirts of Baton Rouge. The local papers called it an accident, faulty wiring, old tape reels catching flame. But the report was strange. The instruments were untouched, and the tape machine kept running until the reels melted. What it captured was later described by one investigator as “a choir screaming through static.”

Decades later, when Mesa Babe began recording Burnin, they used a refurbished console salvaged from that same studio. They didn’t know its history, not at first. But during late-night sessions, the board would emit faint crackles and whispers, as if someone was still recording on another frequency. Addison said the air smelled like ash. Abigail swore she saw names flicker across the faders, initials matching the victims from the ’79 fire.

The band kept going anyway. The song took shape fast, almost too fast, like something was finishing it for them. And when they played back the final mix, they heard it... buried beneath the guitars, under Alice’s voice, a soft, rhythmic breathing.

The file metadata changed itself that night. The timestamp read: 07/12/1979 — 3:06 A.M.
The exact time the Baton Rouge studio burned down.

Afterward, the console refused to power on again. It’s still stored in an unmarked crate somewhere, no label, no serial, no trace. But those who’ve listened to Burnin closely claim the sound of that breathing never left the master.
