Wonderwall (Piano Cover)

"The Four Saints" is a track made as part of the Rhapsody project of Chelsea & Westminster Health Charity in association with the Royal College of Music. 

The track is inspired by the stained glass windows artwork featuring the saints in the Chapel of Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.  From the first moment I saw this piece, the image of the saints reminded me of a rock band such as the Beatles.  I wanted the track to be simple with a vintage blues feeling.  I imagined the saints walking through the wards, healing patients with their Rock-star-like confidence!

This is a re-work of an older track of mine. “Take Me Away” is a simple guitar riff, which has developed its own personality over time since it was created in 2009. Coming from a time of loneliness, it represents a search for strength and liberation from an external source and a conversation with the self to come to the realisation that you are there for yourself and strength comes from within. 

Featuring the beautiful voice of Ambika Jois.

"Navratri Special" BBC Asian Network - Live Lounge Performance

My mum has been suffering with a brain tumour (Hypoglossal Nerve
Schwannoma) over the past few years and has had a number of operations. She experiences symptoms such as tinnitus, headaches and low mood. 

"Hearing Tumours" is a collaboration with my mum to try and express these symptoms and how she feels about her tumour musically. 
I believe in the power of creative arts and music to improve health and wellbeing as well as raising awareness about important health conditions.

Hearing Tumours (feat. Daxa Lad)

This is a new collaboration with the incredibly talented singer-songwriter Ambika Jois.  It came from a very effortless moment when we were jamming together just clearing the mind and seeing what flows. Personally, “Close Your Eyes” represents a relationship with someone, a comfort and love coming from an external person such as family, friend or lover. I think there is an instinctive human yearning for affection, support and security from another person.

Close Your Eyes (feat. Ambika Jois)

This track features the voice of a Hindu priest chanting ancient vedic verses in Sanskrit.  When performed correctly, Sanskrit chanting is a very empowering experience and has a divine power within it. In this track, Pandit Ravi Sharma says an invocation and a Rudra Shloka.  I believe there is a god-like divinity within my guitar and the solo in the track signifies the guitar becoming the source of empowerment.

Pi's Lullaby (Cover Version)

"Circles" is an instrumental rendition of a Gujarati Garba where I improvised around a popular melody.

Navratri is a 9 day festival where Hindus across the world celebrate feminine energy and the triumph of good over evil.  As a child, I remember going to the temple with my family and being fascinated by these loud rhythms that make people come to life and move together in a circle.  This year, many of us will be indoors at home during the festival so I thought I would make some music to keep you entertained!

Circles

So whilst studying Brain and Behaviour module I found the concept of the somatosensory pathways crossing over quite interesting. When a stimulus is felt and crosses over to the other side of the brain for processing and perception. I liked the idea of how something simple and pure can get become something crazy in our perception and what if this stimulus gets distorted on the way to the brain?

Crossing Over (Original)

Amal Lad has made a career out of exploring the intersection between art and medicine. His ability to reveal the connection between music and well-being has been recognised by the BBC and TEDxNHS, as well as countless listeners around the globe.  

Amal released his debut EP ‘Complex Simplicities’ in 2012 and was featured by Bobby Friction on BBC Introducing. Praised for his impressive guitar performances, the EP showcased the emotionally compelling style that would come to define Amal’s sound. He followed this up by branching out into composing for film and spoken word, collaborating with award-winning artists from cultures around the world to celebrate a shared humanity.

“Fight or Flight” is an auditory journey through the human heart and a musical interpretation of the effect of adrenaline on the body.  The track was born out of a break between study sessions in medical school when Amal recorded his own heartbeat and tried to use it in his own music productions. Amal was invited to perform the track on the TEDxNHS stage in 2018 as part of his talk “If you have a heart, you’re making beats”.

His music is influenced by legends including Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page as well as Eastern sounds from AR Rahman, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Ravi Shankar.

Currently, Amal is preparing the release of new experimental music, while continuing his work in medicine and exploring music as a tool for therapy.
