Returning for a further instalment of his long-running series whose first volume appeared in late 2017, Rick Pier O'Neil delivers three new original tracks on "One Side of the Underground, Vol. 6", while remixes come from Colombia and Australia.

Opening proceedings, the bristling bassline groove of "Anki" immediately supplies energy aplenty while heavy beat and atmospheric melodies flow across the 7-minute piece with ease. A hypnotic arpeggio emerges at the mid-point before powering into the second half in dynamic fashion. The lighter melodic air of "Namlus" showcases Rick's production talent as free-flowing harmonies and delicate string motifs join with deep bassline presence to create a rich filmic quality. Plucked synth passages enter the fray post-breakdown where the sonic collage paints a vivid picture. "Tlaloc" continues the oppressive bassline narrative of its partner tracks as shuffling hi-hats add a subtle urgency to proceedings. Pitched analogue synths and a fizzing LFO pattern pierce the mid-range midway, while a coruscating arp pulsates powerfully forwards into the latter stages before ebbing gently away.

A Colombian artist with a rapidly rising reputation, David Barragan is an artist who continues to impress via his Dabeat production moniker. Responsible for a host of production credits on the likes of Anjunadeep, Sprout and Sudbeat Music, his debut solo EP for Proton Music after collaborative work with fellow countryman Kamilo Sanclemente, saw "Equilibrium" illustrate an elegant touch and immaculate sense of rhythm upon its release in May 2022. Returning for his first solo remix, the Dabeat interpretation of "Ixchel" is full of intricate rhythmic flair as cascading rhythms blend with a deep bassline in a smooth new rework. Cleverly using the root melodic phrases from Rick Pier O'Neil's original, a raft of delicate new motifs and production material flows across the latter stages, culminating in a delicious and meandering arpeggio that provides a dance-friendly touch.

Another artist whose stock has risen rapidly among the underground dance fraternity, Zankee Gulati has witnessed a string of impressive releases from his adopted home in New South Wales. Quickly establishing himself in Sydney's club environment, Zankee's production work for the likes of Balance Music, Plattenbank and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, has established the Australian as a driving force. Making his Proton Music debut after a string of releases on Particles, most notably with his 2018 "Breathe" EP, the Zankee Gulati remix builds a new rolling groove around "Imperial" that immediately supplies club-friendly rhythms. Familiar refrains from Rick Pier O'Neil's original flow through the near 9-minute remix while sumptuous pads add new texture. A pulsating white-noise crescendo heralds a driving second half as the iconic main synth motif plays out post-breakdown with hypnotic ease.

Continuing to flourish topside with Dabeat and Zankee Gulati, Rick Pier O'Neil shows his mastery, "One Side of the Underground".

Antrim’s Or Two Strangers opens the new year with a first-time collaboration from K Loveski and Nicolas Benedetti. Russian artist K Loveski has been a beloved figure of the progressive house underground for well over a decade. A series of releases for Omid 16B’s Alola Records spearheaded what has been a thirteen-year creative swell. The Saint-Petersburg resident now boasts a resume highlighted by releases via Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden, Balance Music, Mango Alley and Or Two Strangers, while also earning the support of Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J along the way. Meanwhile, Argentinean artist Nicolas Benedetti has enjoyed a quick rise since first emerging in 2019 with releases via 3rd Avenue, Droid9 and Or Two Strangers affiliate Strangers Beats. The Buenos Aires resident would quickly earn the praise of progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Alex O'Rion, Mariano Mellino, Nicolas Rada and more, while landing key projects via Balkan Connection, onedotsixtwo and SLC-6 Music. Now, combining their extensive forces for the first time, K Loveski and Nicolas Benedetti unveil a three-track showcase for Or Two Strangers entitled ‘Laurana’.

The release begins with the duo masterfully synthesizing their talents into the progressive anthem that is ‘Laurana’. Mountainous grooves and wavy lines make for a smooth hip swinging energy, while cosmic creativities and ethereal phrasing add colour and depth across the first movement. Rhythm remains locked, while energy multiples with each successive pass, as percolating synth maneuveres and robotized vocals provide a bridge into the main break. Tension peaks across the interlude with colourful sonics and collapsing waves of light uniting in a pyrotechnic vortex, perfectly setting the stage for a thrilling finale.

The second selection ‘Spiral Nothing’ continues the pure progressive lean of the release with cosmic effects and driving percussion arrangements blanketing a character-rich capsizing groove. A touch more atmospheric than its predecessor, misty sonics provide a colourful backdrop for sweeping effects and clustered stabs to drive energy into a memorable break. The intuitive musical dialogue held between the duo is impressive across the centrepiece, as melodic coaxes and soulful synth phrasing emerge for moments of meditative bliss, as the beats drop for a groove-centric finale.

Deeper and more elusive still is the third and final selection ‘Fashionably Late’. Thematically distinct, as funked-up bass stabs and kaleidoscopic effects ring out in timeless suspension, creating a utopian narrative where indistinct vocals and enlightening rhythms resonate in a rare combination of atmosphere and groove. A thought-provoking conclusion to an excellent first-time partnership from K Loveski and Nicolas Benedetti, an artist duo who have delivered some of their most engaging work to date here.

Clubsonica Records opens the spring season by unveiling the third edition of their Sampler Series. The Colombian imprint's popular MMW and ADE Various Artists releases have become an annual highlight for progressive music aficionados. Operating under a similar ethos, Clubsonica's Sampler Series made its debut in 2021 to resounding praise from fans and tastemakers alike, with an equally impressive follow-up landing in December of last year. Limited to five select tracks per release, the label has showcased music from trending newcomers like KAZKO and Ric Niels alongside long-standing veterans such as Kamilo Sanclemente and Solid Sessions. Now, presenting the much anticipated third edition of the series, Clubsonica features new music from (in order of appearance) Andre Moret, ARCADIA, Golan Zocher and Greenage, Hyunji-A and Julieta Kühnle.

The collection's third selection and lone collaboration finds Golan Zocher and Greenage combining their extensive forces on 'Mind Control'. Based in Israel and India respectively, both Golan and Greenage have achieved remarkable success across their solo careers. The duo's collective discography is highlighted by releases via Or Two Strangers, Proton Music, Sudbeat and Tale and Tone, while Hernan Cattaneo, Lee Burridge and Nick Warren have been steadfast supporters. Having worked together previously on 'Lost Man', a track which highlighted Sudbeat's recent 'Showcrates' collection, Golan and Greenage masterfully synthesize their talents once again for Clubsoncia with 'Mind Control'. Replete with evolving, emotional and hypnotizing structures, the duo allows the listener to relish in its electric groove, building anticipation towards an apex of fragmented vocals, soaring riffs and elasticated synth swagger.
