It's been a while between sets for me. Covid has meant no gigs, and I have been channelling my creative energies into other avenues of expression. My mixes have been spontaneous, and often, after a flurry of dope mixes, I realise I didn't hit record. Today my favourite person and partner (who plays by the name of DJ Sandy Beaches) made sure I hit record before I hit play. And so here is a set - impromptu and mixed on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon with a few friends.

Psyland Festival Chill Set, June 2014

This set was played, special DJ-chai in hand [thanks Vik a.k.a. 'The Chai Samurai' and Zev], at sunrise on Monday 27 October 2014 at the Fire Stage of Dragon Dreaming Festival, located in Wee Jasper, NSW.

The sun physically rose above the horizon during the second last track and then bathed the stage in a beautiful, rich orange light during the last track. It was super cool to look around see people dancing, sun gazing, chilling and generally soaking in the sacred vibes present at the birth of a new day.

Sunrise set played at the Yemaya Festival in Victoria, 2016.

The sun rose exactly on cue - at the 1:20 mark; it was cloudless, and were suspended between between the energies of day and night; the moon just on day off full in front of the decks (i.e. behind the dance floor), and the rising sun behind me and my beautiful dancer.

It was the first time I've built a set with a performer, and it was ace. A beautiful way to birth a day...

Altar Records Promo Mix 2016

The set played for a public art experience organised by Ali Nasseri, a talented photographer and even better friend.

I have known Ali for over 25-years. He is one of my favourite humans. The first time I saw his work displayed, whilst I was excited to see my friend exhibit his work, the overarching feeling I was left with was of having interacted with real art. Thematically rich, provocative, articulate, authentic and thoughtful. The fact it was made by such a wonderful human was just an (admittedly massive) side benefit.

When I heard about his second exhibition I was determined to be involved in his vision to make art available to the public for free. Certainly there was a crowd-funding campaign as well, but people had free access at view all the art hanging in a beautiful space. Free wine was offered to visitors (generously provided by McWilliams Wines)whilst a few dear friends and I played music.

This is one of my favourite sets to have played of all time; playing Shulman in an art gallery felt like something clicked-in-a-good-way. It honestly felt like it was a musical moment destined to happen from the moment time was breathed into being by the causeless cause.

It was a privilege to be part of that happening.

Rainbow Serpent is an epic festival in Australia. This year was its 20th Anniversary and myself and couple of friends were fortunate to be asked to co-create it by playing a couple of sets and running a yoga class. Working alongside some of the best musical acts and workshop presenters going around, it was a delight. Added to this we got to spend some time with the Melbourne branch of our super-dope tribe. I left this festival exhausted but with a full cup.

This particular set was played at sunset (from 20:00 - 21:30) on the Friday evening. I love playing sunsets <3

Subsonic Launch Party 2017

The seeds for this set were sown in three places, the first was during an evening in Melbourne playing music for a talented artist and dear friend (Zev Landes) who drew the image I'm using for this set. Whilst he could explain the minutiae of meaning embedded into the image, the essence of it is a comment on the cliched 'perfection' that much visionary art contains. I played while some talented creative people made art. Thank-you for the opportunity to play for you all.

The second seed of inspiration was sown whilst sharing music with an interesting human I met during my psychotherapist training in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales in Australia in March 2017.

The third space of inspiration for this set was whilst I was in Thailand immersing myself in Kashmiri Shivaism in late 2016 and some interesting humans I met there as well.

A couple of weeks ago I received a message from Chromanova asking me if I had any fresh sets they could stream. I didn't at the time, but an hour and a half later I had this recorded (i.e. its completely improvised).

I had a curry on while I was mixing this set and was looking for a track long enough for me to dice a kilogram of potatoes and put them into the pot - thank-you Makyo! Ten minutes was perfect for chopping and placing the potatoes with enough time to season as well <3

There is quite a bit of new music worked  into this mix.

September 27 saw Alaya Sounds and myself play a cheeky evening set in the delightful surf village of Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka at the Hideaway Resort, more specifically at the initimate bar contained within, Hideaway Blue. The brothers who run the café and Bar, Yanik and Yhevin are absolutely top-shelf humans, as is the whole crew. Special love and vibes for my main man Zev Landes, who put the whole thing together.

The weather was warm, the smiles frequent and the vibes peerless.

If you find yourself feeling the pull of the open road and Goa  feels passe, then I recommend come and hanging out with Yanik and Yevin at the Hideaway Resort in Arugam Bay and their new place, Salty Swami’s in Hikkaduwa (also in Sri Lanka).

Subsonic Festival 2017: Saturday Sunset at the Chillsonic Lounge

This year Earth Frequency was run south west of Brisbane in March 2018. It is a festival that captures the essence of Australian festivals from what was a ‘golden period’ around the turn of the millennium. Stellar line-up, amazing organisation, peerless care of the artists along with great attendees made this one of the best festivals I’ve been to in years.

TranquiLab Radio Invited set 2018

The Dragon Dreaming Festival celebrated its 10th Anniversary this year. It is perched on the banks of a pristine lake, which acted as both a spectacular back-drop and also refreshing place to swim. The site is without doubt one of the most beautiful in Australia.

The festival itself has matured into a truly beauty-filled gathering. It was a super clean festival with many delightful moments. This is becoming of my favourite festivals in my calendar. I hope I get to play there again in years to come.

Saturday night in The Sanctuary, Earth Frequency 2019

Based in Central Queensland this last weekend (April 2019), Treepsyde  was an intimate gathering of beautiful souls with a vision of regenerating native bushland damaged by the colonisation of Australia. Plantings during the day were supplemented with music to soothe calloused hands afterward.

While Ant and I were preparing this set, there were frequent tropical downpours. One of the plucky volunteers, Josie Howie was amazing as she literally used her body to protect our laptops and gear from the rain - thank you!

Thank-you also to the Treepsyde Crew for looking after us so well. It was a very enjoyable experience.

Chilling in the Blissed-Out Groove Temple 026

Doctor of law, post-Jungian psychotherapist, Label DJ for Altar Records (Canada) and sessional DJ for Radio Q37 with my spot 'Chilling In The Blissed-Out Groove Temple'. Ranked 7th chill DJ 2016 and 6th in 2017 in the Psybient.org annual poll.

Generally I prepare chill-out journeys engineered to appeal to any music lover that consciously engages with their sense of hearing. Any particular set may span pretty much any genre under the umbrella of 'chill out'; progressive, IDM, breaks, psydub, glitch hop, ambient, trance, dub step, house, bass - good music is good music. 

At a pinch I would say that I strive to bring the experience of a top notch house party to the outdoors. Sit back and reach into the sound or alternatively get up and embody the music - come as you are and enjoy some wonderfully produced, carefully selected, intelligent music that is prepared with love... and always purchased, never simply taken.

I have a sessional spot on RadioQ37 and am featured artist on Chromanova.de. I have played at numerous festivals including Rainbow Serpent, Regrowth, Yemaya Festival, Dragon Dreaming, and closed for the Desert Dwellers in Sydney in 2015.
