With that being said this production took me to the feeling of driving into the sunset and watching the sky turn into all kinds of beautiful colours.

Emotional Rationale for the mix :
The mix is a dedication to love and its many layers, which sometimes can be contradictory or even absent. Love does not only exist between lovers but it exists between friends, in God, at times of war even during pain and loss. The mix also explores the absence of love in times of hardship and through growth and self care and eventually self actualisation, we may find self love and prioritisation amidst the noise. 2020 has been a year of learning for us all and  love has become even more important during this time than ever before. I hope this mix gives you something to think about, cry about, feel or even dance but essentially a moment to just slow down and give yourself a break.

Technical Rationale for the mix :
As a dj I believe in the fundamentals of what a dj should be, know how to blend and mix, always have a great selection and sequence however i've also come to realise that deejaying is an art and we as dj's tend to forget that, as a result we have also kept it safe and obvious. With this mix i challenge myself to not only focus on mixing beats on beats  but using noise and filtering different elements within songs but also creating singular  conversation with songs from different artists. I also wanted to make sure i do this mix without the help of a software, theres something special about making mixes the analog way, the mistakes, the joy of the mix and blend and the instant magic that happens in the moment.For me its the gaps in between where you can slide a sound bite, or cram a simingly unimportant sound for the listener delight and surprise. This mix is a technical challenge to myself and curation of everything happening in my head, all the interconnected noise I listen to. In keeping with the spirit of the mix i welcome the listener to find the mistakes and embrace the many hidden and obvious kinks about it.

Music Rationale for the mix :
The mix is the limitless canvas and the music becomes the instrument with which I choose to tell the story(ies) of our life. I also wanted to tell the interconnected story of black love from a South African / African context to the  world and the many commonalities we all share as black people. From spirituality, violence, defeat , loss and survival, but also joy, triumph and finding love. The mix is constantly changing in tempo, content , emotion, energy  and music genrers, its really all connected and its possible to play different genres to tell a bigger a story  but this mix force's you to be patient and slow down. I wanted to make sure I use the mix  as an emotional commentary to express what i see and what i feel but put some thought provoking positive energy in the world because we deserve it. A mix of live music, electronic and spoken word and commentary.

Conclusion 
2020 has been the most challenging year of our generation, we have seen dearth alongside life and pain along with joy but we've also seen and felt Love.In 2020 we have also come to realise how important dj's and yes Deejaying is also a sacred art form. This mix celebrates all you collectors, deejays, compilers that have kept the world going and inspired. This season of pain and discomfort I look forward to centering deejays with the same importance as all the other artist and creators. You are not background music entertainers but you've shows that the world needs you as much as it needs all the other things are important.

[PSMEX007] Various Artists - EXCURSIONS # 7

As Bristol’s Phuture Shock Musik strides into its landmark tenth year in action and the next chapter of its journey, the sister arm of the label casts the net a little wider in both a geographic sense and genre wise for its latest vinyl-only compilation release -‘EXCURSIONS # 7’. Rallying up a dynamic force of global talent from as far and wide as South Korea to South Africa through to Europe and the United States, this instalment orbits a sonic dimension where modern, left-leaning strains of house, broken beat and future soul freely collide together across four exclusive cuts. 

Joining the ride once again, although in remixed form, is Seoul’s foreman of leftfield house and techno, DJ Bowlcut. Here the controls are handed over to veteran UK bass experimentalist and Hyperdub mainstay Scratcha DVA aka Scratchclart, who flips the original track – lifted from ‘EXCURSIONS # 5’ – inside out and squarely on its head, with riotous, gqom-inspired results. Some new blood is introduced in the shape of electronic musician Evan If, here making his debut appearance on wax. Hailing from Seattle, though now based in Barcelona and very much a part the city’s experimental music scene, the synth devotee has a few prior self-releases to his name, and has also previously collaborated on material with fellow Barcelona resident and PSM regular Karmasound; under the moniker Evan & Damián.

Also making a debut entry on Phuture Shock and 
the vinyl format is rising electronic soul producer ECHLN, coming straight out of Cape Town. Assisted by emerging singer-songwriter Amarafleur on vocal duties, the South African’s offering affirms his knack for collaboration with the cream of Mzansi soul and R&B talent. In recent years his futuristic productions have surfaced on Singapore’s Darker Than Wax imprint and Johannesburg label Stay True Sounds, among others. Representing stateside and completing the unique quartet is Atlanta’s very own Stefan Ringer. A key player of the A-Town’s burgeoning dance underground, over the last decade the producer and DJ – initially known as REKchampa - has released a trail of heat via the likes of Kai Alcé’s NDATL, Black Catalogue, PPU, plus his own FWM imprint. And here remains on form with a dancefloor-ready contribution to round off the disc.
