The phrase "liminal in hospital turquoise and blood mask" arrived in my brain early one morning as a hypnagogic hallucination, inspiring me to dig through my dream journals and explore some of the more interesting entries -

Lucid dreams, vivid and visceral and textural.

Spacial and temporal inconsistencies, often considered normal in the context of dreams.

Ghosts from the past that continue to haunt, many years after their real counterparts have exited my life.

Feelings of loss and grief on scales I've never experienced in waking life.

After spending too long believing I didn't have the skillset to put these thoughts and feelings to music, it is done. Hopefully everything has been reflected and is felt.

The Body is a Prison is a deep dive into an emotional inner world, seemingly just as ready to explode into violence as it is to crumble in despair, but still somehow floating on a sense of wonder. Insane sound design glitches interject beautifully composed piano and synth layers, weaving together into some sort of enormous mechanism. Rhythms coalesce and fall apart, melodies float between seemingly infinite states, everything reshaping itself as we go deeper and deeper into the imagined world. Everything from the cohesive sonic palette, to the flow of each song and phrase, to the journey of the whole album has been considered in incredible detail. If this is Amaranth Todd’s early work in hyperglitch, I think we should all be excited for (and afraid of) what’s to come.

Amaranth’s sound design, oscillations between obscured and clear pulse, dynamic forms, and mosaic layers are exactly what I imagine when I think of hyperglitch, and is exactly the type of music Philippe Macnab-Seguin and I have been working on outlining in our forthcoming paper about Hyperglitch and Aural Sonology. All the while, Amaranth’s many years of musical experience bring new and exciting ideas to the style. The Body is a Prison launches my imagination into a world where we could have whole event line ups and labels of hyperglitch, and many communities and resources for new artists that are interested in learning the techniques, all helping to establish the edges of the genre while simultaneously expanding it.

Last summer we had the opportunity to release the mindblowing *Liminal in Hospital Turquoise and Blood Mask*.

Now, we are proud to announce **LIHTABM demos**, a collection of alternative arrangements of tracks taken from the original album.

While every creative project leaves some amount of material behind on the cutting room floor, the ideas in LIHTABM Demos are meaningful enough to extend into their own identities, culminating in 6 incredible hyperglitch tracks that capture amaranth_todd's creative processes while showcasing her familiar rock-solid production skills and songwriting abilities.

“As a producer, I have a tendency to categorise my tracks into Serious tracks and Fun tracks. Serious tracks are usually complicated and full of moody instrumentation, whereas Fun tracks are more straightforward and have lots of wacky sound design. This set is a collection of Fun tracks, both released and unreleased.“

Melbourne’s Amaranth_Todd has quickly blazed a trail as one of hyperglitch’s pre-eminent awe-inspirers. From early tracks on Dreamcode & Geometric Corruption, an array of bootlegs & remixes plus two pivotal 2023 EPs, all these culminated in Amaranth’s 2024 album Liminal in Hospital Turquoise & Blood Mask. A record that soars & simultaneously searches an astronomical darkness, LIHTABM was a Realist favourite & one of the most startling releases in recent electronic music.
       Cross-stitching cybernetic techno, with tinges of atmospheric electro & a surplus of tunes balancing that relationship of sublimity & sensuality which characterises hyperglitch, Amaranth’s RA mix sounds something like an extra-planetary portrait. But a portrait that never shies from placing aside the galactic the granular, of setting abundant and unresolved emotion against the sounds of a world in its entirety. And serving, amidst all this, as a document of a talent flagrantly ascending.
