Episode #96: In 1985, Mark Robinson sent a letter to Ian MacKaye asking about how to press vinyl records. The year earlier, he founded Teen-Beat Records in Arlington, Virginia. Initially, only one copy of each release existed. Now, the label has over 200 releases under its belt and has shaped the D.C. independent music scene alongside MacKaye’s punk label Dischord. Both Mark and Ian join us on this episode to talk Teen-Beat, D.C., and more.

OPILIO by ÆTHEREAL ARTHROPOD is a cross-section of cryptic nanomaterials, a meltdown into pure digitalia, where ringing discontinuities escalate from mere artifact to a fully menacing buzzing metallic hum. An insectoid self-modifying system, this biomimetic organism-machine recodes its own mRNA; it scrapes along its own artificial chitinous fabric, a powered exoskeleton filled with grey goo, behaving like a swarm intelligence fully acclimatized to the realm of microsound. It zooms through impossible digital convolution windows while a digital blade rips microscopic devices into autonomous granules, a cricket simulation's stridulations starts to resemble the output of an abstract machine. Beneath the cellular clatter, the mechanized sweeps and the self-replicating pulsed ripples, what we come face to face with is something that can only be described as a fully alien machinic multiplicitous consciousness.

"Seven thousand million clicks simultaneously sounding at every possible fraction of time, an endless path towards the closest step we thought necessary to fuse with totality. A limitless notion of a blank space designed to recreate the idea of meditation. As a conceptual craving we determine an urgency even to claim the integration of rest, not just as a possibility but as a solid fact. To be able to sculpt a system of beliefs dense enough, or subjectively valid to ground a vision, a structure of nouns able to rule over matter. An empty God. 

Is even possible to integrate artificiality into the organism in a balanced way, is it a natural process detached from what we first understood as biologistic, we were wrong defining nature... we were wrong defining, thinking we were more than anything, creating idols, empowering ideas and words.. trusting on our critical vision, self-misunderstanding its concept of cognition, fake dispositions of overlayered empty spaces, across the layers of anti-logic, who is the one who dared to believe further away from the primordial state of nothingness, clean, aseptic, meticulous and neat matter... heretics. As an eternal betrayal to existence, our identities shall never be mentioned .. neither our bodies, nor our fate. As one relies on the purpose, death sharps its targets, shooting with infinitesimal accuracy in an everlasting succession of quasi-reached glory, never to be achieved, never to be risen, cursed to apologize for such sacrilegious beingness."

rrrrrrafael by r hunter is a huge spectral panorama held together at the seams by precise percussion flickering between creaky electroacoustics and punchy HD SFX. The treatment of the sound material here is like hearing the hallucinatory product from a noise removal algorithm pushed beyond its intended domain, something uncompromisingly sharp, rippling, ringing, totally embracing its own digitality. But this digitality is not a cold digitality and finds its counterpoint in various organic interventions, ranging from liquid bass stabs to autotuned lamentations to oceanic drum kit adventures. Throughout this translates into variously sized tension-release-structures keeping these pieces breathing and moving as crisp dsp and smeared tones lose and again assume form, the density of the discrete sound components always allowing for new permutations.

"The process of writing rrrrrrafael was a deeply personal experience that occurred during an intense period of musical growth in my life. Amongst the discourse around de/re-constructing club music, I instead relied upon a fairly abstract musical constraint by asking myself the following question: How would you reconstruct music from your mind’s image of sound? I approached this by using a symbolic method of composition, creating graphic scores and making macro-structural decisions based upon my experience of what sounds ‘look like’ before committing to any audio. Because of this, a lot of the sound design is a functional result of different emotional states that I experienced rather than a conscious effort to capitalise on aesthetic complexity."

With ‘CHORDS’, the Stockholm-based musician and composer Ellen Arkbro returns to Subtext, following her acclaimed debut album ‘For Organ and Brass’.

This new longplayer sees Arkbro adopt a more minimalist approach, focusing on the immediate qualities of sound and elegantly expanding the tonal capacities of acoustic instruments using precise, subtle synthesis.

Composed of a carefully selected combination of tones, ‘CHORDS’ stretches, extends and obscures the timbral character of the instruments it is performed on.

Across both tracks, Arkbro examines the sonic materiality and harmonic quality of chords. She considers how the compositions occupy space rather than time – transposing theoretical possibilities into the phenomenal realm.

As a part of Arkbro’s systematic investigation of harmonic sound, ‘CHORDS’ proffers a divergence from conventional ways of listening. This work allows for a form of listening which goes beyond the mere reception of outer stimuli in letting the listener experience their role as active, and as embodying the sound itself. Space rather than time becomes the primary locus of listening as subtle movement of head and body reveals the inner complexities of ‘CHORDS’.
