When light impinges on a flat boundary between two different transparent media, generally at least some part of its optical power is reflected. However, for a particular angle of incidence, which is called Brewster's angle (after Sir David Brewster) or sometimes polarizing angle, that reflection does not occur provided that the light is p-polarized. The latter condition means that the polarization direction (i.e., the direction in which the electric field vector oscillates) lies within the plane of incidence. For s-polarized light, the reflectivity is even higher than for light with normal incidence on the boundary.


Here, and are the refractive indices of the medium of the incoming beam and the other medium, respectively. One can show that the sum of the angles in both media (relative to the direction for normal incidence) is 90°.


Examples of optical elements which are often used at Brewster's angle are laser crystals, birefringent tuners, prism pairs for wavelength tuning or dispersion compensation, and Brewster windows in gas lasers. In the case of prisms, this technique can of course work at the input and output face only if the angle between the two surfaces is correctly chosen. For example, for a prism made of fused silica (SiO2) and the wavelength of 1064 nm, where the refractive index is 1.486, the ideal angle between the prism surfaces would be 67.9°. When an angle of 65° is used instead, the reflection losses for a symmetric path through the crystal are &approx;0.7% in total. For 60°, that loss would already rise to 3.8%. For a glass like SF10, having a higher refractive index of &approx;1.7 at 1064 nm, the ideal prism angle would be at 60.8°, and when choosing the common value of 60°, the reflection losses are still quite small (0.2% total).


In principle, one can obtain a strong and adjustable attenuation of a polarized laser beam by reflecting it e.g. on a glass surface with an angle of incidence close to Brewster's angle. The problem of that technique, however, is that the reflectivity for s-polarized light is then much higher; even if the incoming beam is quite well polarized, a small s-polarized component of it could play a dominant role in the reflected beam. As explained in the article on depolarization loss, some s-polarized components can easily be generated under certain circumstances.


Disturbing optical reflections from water surfaces can be substantially attenuated with polarizing glasses, transmitting only vertically polarized light. Although the angle of incidence of sunlight may often deviate substantially from Brewster's angle, the reflectivity for p-polarized is generally much lower than for s-polarized light.


Only for p polarization, we can have the situation that for a suitable angle of incidence the E-field direction in the medium is perpendicular to the direction into which the reflected light would go. Under those condition, no light can go there. For s polarization, that could not happen.


What should I do if I want to make a beam of light polarized? Could I insert a Brewster plate and adjust the angle to Brewster's angle? Is the transmitted light detected from the Brewster plate polarized in this condition?


Although the transmissivity of a Brewster plate is polarization-dependent, it is not fully polarized, since both polarizations are transmitted to some extent. Only the reflected light at Brewster's angle is polarized.

Hey people . New linux user here . When I selected dark mode in the menu (which I get after welcome screen ) it worked fine for some apps but apps like okular , libre office don't seem to sync with that . In the past, Guild Wars were common as Legal Guilds fought over commercial rights, land and establishments.[5] At the end of the Second Trade War, the Magic Council passed the Interguild Dispute Interdiction Treaty that forbids all acts of aggression against other guilds.[6]


The total number of guilds in the continent of Ishgar is 500. In comparison, Alakitasia, the Western Continent, has 730 guilds (including Dark Guilds) which have also united into a single, centralized and militaristic Alvarez Empire.[7]


The main power in the Kingdom of Fiore is the King and his Government. Under his order is the Magic Council, which enforces rules over the guilds to uphold lawful employment of Mages and the enforcement of appropriate conduct.[8][9] When Guilds cause destruction or other disturbances to the peace, it is the responsibility of the Magic Council to reprimand them. The Council is made up of very powerful Mages, some of whom have the power to legalize or disband Guilds.[1]


Legal Guilds are those guilds which are recognized by the Magic Council and most have strong connections to multiple other legal guilds. Guild Masters form a body called the Local Guild Master League and they meet for various purposes. There is currently more than one league in Fiore.[10]


The hierarchy within Guilds typically has three tiers. The Guild Master is the single most influential Mage within the Guild. Under the Master are the S-Rank Mages, who have authority to undertake S-Rank jobs. Mages are the common rank, and are not allowed to accept S-Rank jobs without an S-Rank Mage with them. There are usually many teams formed within guilds; these teams are composed of various members of their Guild and can vary in strength. A team is a small clique of members within a guild who frequently undertake the same jobs together. In the Fairy Tail guild, the self-proclaimed strongest team consists of Natsu Dragneel and Happy, Lucy Heartfilia, Gray Fullbuster, Erza Scarlet, and Wendy Marvell and Carla.


A Guild Master is a Mage who is the head of the guild that he or she is affiliated with. Typically, Guild Masters are very powerful, often being the strongest Mage in their guilds. Occasionally, they are even members of the Ten Wizard Saints, as with the case of Makarov Dreyar.[11] As the heads of their own respective guilds, they virtually have complete authority over their subordinates, and can thus dictate their actions. As such, they are able to excommunicate members of their guilds[12][13] or even reappoint them as an official member, as seen with Laxus.[14] They also have the power to decide who the next master of the guild will be.[15]





An S-Class Mage is a powerful Mage that is recognized by the Guild Master and is able to undertake S-Class Jobs, and despite the very good pay, they are considered to be so dangerous that even the simplest mistake can cost them their life. [16] The overall strength of S-Class Mages differs from guild to guild. In some instances, an S-Class Mage is considered the strongest within their respective guilds, as with the case of Jura.[17]
