Marginalia welcomes more bubbling top-tier talent to the label with the release of its first ever VA compilation, ‘Bestiary Vol. 1’. 

Released worldwide on Friday, February 23, Marginalia’s ‘Bestiary Vol. 1’ VA features a total of seventeen unique productions from a selection of artists whose immaculate productions have become a mainstay in Elif’s DJ sets over the past twelve months. 

A term dating back to the Middle Ages – roughly translating to ‘an encyclopaedia of beasts’ – the first instalment of ‘Bestiary’ is  accompanied by a continuous mix of all tracks from Elif, as she welcomes an array of Marginalia mainstays and debuting talent to the label for an epic compendium of discerning dance floor cuts.

Joining returning artists Althoff, Jaffer and MANTi, are an incredible fifteen debutant acts – Ayan, Esin, Evade, I Promised Mom, Juan Gioffre, Mumboi, Mrqz, Rebrn, Sam Farsio, Samet Gunal, Sebastian Duarte, Snirco, Tenvin, Tito Azevedo and VALON & LERM – all of whom bring their own unique contributions to the first chapter of Marginalia’s ‘Bestiary’ VA series; a package which showcases some of the very finest interpretations of underground house and techno on the label to date.

I find myself dancing in a colorful room. I can't see any walls anywhere and yet it feels like I'm inside a building. It seems as if the room is so big that you simply can't see the walls. Lights in all the colors of the rainbow are raining down from the ceiling. Well, actually, I can't really see the ceiling either. I just assume that there is a ceiling behind all the lights. The bodies of dozens of figures are moving around me, but no one seems to be interacting with me. No matter which way I turn, everyone has their backs to me as they twitch ecstatically to the music.I shrug my shoulders and just keep dancing.

The exploration of the deeper side of techno by Dosem, since busting onto the scene almost 10 years ago, has seen him clock up countless air miles, release a string of hit club tracks and earn accolades from many of his peers, who deem him to be one of the most influential underground Spanish DJs in the scene today. The demand for Dosem's infusion of deep textured sounds, relentless precision drums and driving rhythms which make up his club cuts that are making dance floors shake the world over shows no sign of slowing. Once again, Chi Wow Wah Town Festival has left me with a heart full of love and excitement. This festival (and crew) mean the world to me and they put soooo much passion into their productions, artist selections and general ethos. 

It gives me immense joy to play for them and this set was pretty special. Playing some earthy progressive techno vibes, which received an overwhelming response from the crowd. My heart is full. I hope you all enjoy this closing set as much as I did playing it. Big love! xo

@chiwowwahtown 2024 was absolutely next level in every aspect.  The energy of the dance floor and the love that was emanating back to me, was nothing I had ever experienced before.  It was rather overwhelming at times, to the point of being so overstimulated and overheating. 🔥💥😍

▌I Could you take us through a day in your life, from a possible morning routine through to your work?
It depends on how many projects I have on the go at once; sometimes I am solely doing music, other times when I am working a 'day job' on the side, it comes and goes, so at those times life is very busy because it's 2 jobs :') . But I think a lot of artists can relate to this - gigging can be very up and down, especially in the phase of 'establishing yourself', and it can be reassuring to have a steady source of income during those phases.

Regardless, a few key principles remain...I always start the day with a good coffee (this is like the highlight of my day haha) and a look at the sun (even though in London it's often raining)...I try to prioritise things to take care of my health, and one really important one for DJs is to work on your circadian rhythm - it's important to get outside in daylight first thing in the morning after waking as this exposure to sunlight helps to reset your sleep pattern. 

Usually I'm getting music admin or other 'day-job' type work tasks done during the day, and then it comes to producing and working on music for DJ sets etc, I prefer to do this in the evening when it's darker. Actually my favourite timing for studio work would be 7-8pm - 2-3am, I feel a lot more creative during these hours (which helps also for the DJ job) !

Finally, I have been working on having a proper wind-down routine at the end of the day - it's helpful to switch off all technology, and put the phone in another room / on airplane mode after a certain hour. I will try to do relaxing, present moment things for a bit at the end of the day, like meditate, read a book, take a bath etc, and get into the here & now because when we're working on tasks I think our brain gets so caught up in the future and our goals etc. Sometimes I'm also hitting the gym and sauna on evenings, also important for health!

▌II Which artist influenced you a lot?
My favourite painter is Rothko and I am very inspired by him, just in use of colour to portray raw emotions. I love simplicity, and I like bold artwork, whatever the medium be it painting or music. I love art where the message is communicated with subtlety. I appreciate raw, distressed and imperfect elements in artwork too, as opposed to a glossy finish. Musically, I've been inspired / influenced by artists like Nicolas Jaar, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Mano Le Tough, Stimming, Recondite and many more of course.

▌III How did you prepare this mix and what was your main inspiration?
Once, during a set, a lighting engineer asked me exactly what mood I want to evoke with my music, and the answer always stuck with me (and I think it's very true in this set). I want to bring about a moody, groovy, hypnotic vibe - melodic, yet subtle and not 'in your face', but layered with quite intense emotional depth and some melancholic elements. I always think that being brought to feeling a bit sad on the dancefloor (or when listening music) is the best and it's a goal when I'm playing or making a mix. It helps you to feel the full spectrum of your emotions & release them. I really hope you'll enjoy this mix :)
