Sometimes there are moments and sets in London clubland where the stars align, certain artists are in the building and the energy is LOOSE.

Skee Mask at the HVYWGHT 4th Birthday back in February was one of those moments.

Following on from a South London Digital Mystikz homecoming at peak time to a fever pitch Brixton Electric. Playing a dubstep party for the first time, alongside legends of the scene - Skee Mask proceeded to play one of the hardest sets we’ve ever seen, effortlessly mixing classic grime into dubstep into techno into breaks and beyond.

A flurry of MC’s were in the wings, none of whom were booked to host the set but had no choice but to jump on. The energy was infectious - Flowdan B2B Trim B2B Chunky B2B SP:MC over Skee Mask on the Sinai Soundsystem. We can guarantee you will never get this combination of artists on a set EVER again.

Diskotopia is elated to close out 2016 with a live-and-direct trajectile traced from Quezon City to East Richmond through to Tokyo as the inimitable Seekersinternational Presents the RaggaPreservationSociety EP. Self-described as “raw raggamuffin bizniz from a parallel dimension”, SKRS deliver eleven diamond-cut jewels born from a decades-long love of ragga jungle then sequenced into two mixtape-style A and B sides with accompanying digital-sliced tracks. Having melted minds and record players globally over the past several years, SKRS continue to thrill with their incendiary mutations of soundsystem-born musical exercises following incredible LPs on Bokeh Versions and Boomarm Nation. Throughout the proceedings of the RaggaPreservationSociety EP, SKRS lead an expedition through time, space and vibrational language like none has done before.

With such an expansive and breathtakingly singular approach to an undertaking such as the RaggaPreservationSociety EP we thought it best to share the inspirations from the SKRS crew themselves. SKRS OG Papa Cool Breeze states:

"These recordings were made at the unlikely convergence of London pirate radio transmissions, Filipino-Canadian mobile DJ crew gatherings and New-age music meditation communes. The sound palette may be familiar but the context and design are on some other sh*t. Previously known only in their own circles, peer-to-peer networks and Usenet newsgroups, we are now presenting them to a wider listening massive.”
Respected ethnomusicologist, Sipreano (Grammy-nominated producer/archivist behind Light in the Attic Record's Native North America and Jamaica to Toronto compilations) reports:

"We formed this project to archive and showcase works that widen our scope of understanding of this Ragga diaspora. Rather than a sterile preservation of established templates, the RaggaPreservationSociety aims at preservation-by-expansion; championing instead ragga jungle's intrinsic spirit of ghetto-futurism and back-a-yard innovation; simultaneously cultivating the roots while fostering new fruits.”
The RaggaPreservationSociety EP is an exemplary showcase of the untestable might of Seekersinternational; psychedelically fluid by means of communication yet rock solid in its construction. Reductionist, poignant and deadly in delivery, the level of creative freedom by means of musical dialogue spoken by SKRS is wholeheartedly awed upon and applauded by Diskotopia.

After signing on with Gatto Fritto’s mind-melting Sound of Love International Volume 1, we’re back, we can smell summer and we’re putting you in the capable hands of festival favourites, Washington DC’s Beautiful Swimmers. A beautiful swimmer is a small blue crab.

The Beautiful Swimmers are Ari Goldman and Andrew Field-Pickering (AKA Max D). And you, my friend, are about to get high on the happy. They’re here to take you on a gleeful joyride around their collective musical imagination.

The Swimmers are full bore record enthusiasts you see, but whereas you might associate this with squirrelly, exclusive and crabby sorts, they are inclusive, human and warm. It’s a wide-eyed ebullient romp and the joy of discovery is one to share. And to see them DJ IS a joy - they’re having at least as much fun as anyone else in the room, locked together tight, riding the same wave.

So even when shit gets somewhat darker, the tempos higher and sounds gnarlier (Analogous Doom) the world is never grey. When we’re stone cold balearic in the Adriatic (Plunky) the vibe is up, young and fun. Banging them b’more house beats? Well, you’re probably going to be recognising a welcoming RnB sample (KW Griff).

We’ve also been blessed with some Swimmer’s specials in the shape of ‘Blow Up Girl’ and ‘Living in a Zone’. Exclusive. Ari and Andrew have previously worked in dog and childcare respectively. If this compilation was a dog it’d be a “rascal”, if it were a kid it’d be “spirited”.

We can’t think of anyone better to be your guides, as they themselves might say, “it’s a vibe”.
