This is American Dharma's debut EP, Embers.

Embers invites listeners on a journey of self-discovery, with sounds and feels that align well with bands such as Alice in Chains, Metallica, and Tool.

The sound is a blend of stoner rock, metal, and grunge. The movements are gritty, melodic, and brooding like a great vessel crashing and charging across rolling waves. The songs carry us through storms unto clear, wide spaces, where the embers of yesterdays fires now light a new way.

Available now on iTunes, Amazon, streaming, and Compact Disc, American Dharma’s debut EP “Embers” explores a new direction for heavy music by combining the momentum of hardcore punk and thrash, and the mass of grunge and doom, with the light and shade of jazz and progressive rock.

Drummer Mark Fleagle lays the bedrock for what producer Doug Benson has coined “dunj” (short for “dungeon rock”) with his powerhouse backbeat and punching double kick. Giving an identity to the songs that goes beyond “riff-based” metal, guitarist Jesse Neal strikes the balance between technically proficient and uniquely expressive. 

Tying these two elements together, bassist James Hash utilizes a broad and present low end tone to maintain a driving heaviness, not unlike flooring the gas on a fully-loaded Freightliner. Within this fabric, vocalist Chris McKinley explores the complexity of human relationships and communication by employing his robust vocal range and tactfully written lyrics.

Prior to forming American Dharma in the fall of 2018, Jesse Neal and Mark Fleagle spent three years writing and jamming as Soul Quest Overdrive with a variety of temporary participants. These sessions yielded the bones of key EP tracks “Gemini” and “Damaged Coda”. In late August of 2018, Jesse called upon high school friend James Hash, formerly of Infusion and Rise of Tides, to join in, initially on second guitar. Almost immediately, James switched to playing bass to add the low end heaviness that the songs were craving. James had been planning a side project with his former Rise of Tides band mate, vocalist Chris McKinley, but suggested instead that Chris be brought into the newly christened American Dharma. The four went to work on refining Soul Quest Overdrive’s prior work into a working repertoire and live show aimed at leaving audiences sweaty, disheveled, and begging for more.
