Ninety-seven year young James Scott was born in the mountains of eastern Kentucky into a very large family. Scott shares stories of growing up in the Depression and, as a child, working on the farm to provide food for the family. In 1944, seventeen year old Scott lied about his age to get into the Army. He discusses basic training where he became proficient with rifles and machine guns plus learning hand to hand combat maneuvers.

 They were tough. We are rebroadcasting an interview with my Aunt Irma. She grew up during the Depression, experienced the dirty thirties in western Kansas, on the heels of WWII. Aunt Irma talks about the hundreds of letters that she and my uncle sent during their long distance courtship throughout WWII. She explains her duties working for the rationing board which rationed sugar, coffee, and shoes among other things and shares a stateside perspective regarding WWII that we seldom hear.

Rutledge discusses FDR’s grudge against Rickenbacker when Rickenbacker challenged FDR on dangerous training practices for pilots.

Lewis Mangan, Roger Mangan’s stepfather, enlisted in the Army in June of 1942. Roger Mangan shares stories of Lewis’ WWII battles. Lewis initially fought in North Africa, then Anzio, Solerno, the liberation of southern France, and ultimately liberating Dachau concentration camp. In 1989, Lewis and Roger took a three week trip to Europe to revisit the battle sites, towns, and villages from WWII.
