Extrawelt - Messy Machinery

With a busy weekend ahead for Ninja Tune and Big Dada artists in London, DJ Irk steps up with a heavy mix which includes music from DJ Kentaro, Hexstatic, The Bug and Congo Natty who are all playing at Village Underground. There's more from the label with Two Fingers, Machinedrum, Raffertie and Toddla T all representing, plus  Killer Mike who is due to release on Big Dada alongside El-P in November. All this and tracks from Eprom, London Grammar, J Dilla and Reso wraps up a mighty fine show.

This is the first mix I have made since coming back from The Oregon Eclipse. It was a truly magical experience. I saw and heard a lot of new music at the festival. But there was one set that really stood out for me, and i dedicate this mix to it as it changed the music I now buy. Thank you &Me for playing such an amazing set on the Monday night after the Eclipse.......

As Turbo celebrates its 20th anniversary, we feel conflicted over making a big deal out of it. On the one hand, 20 years of sustained excellence makes you an institution. On the other, it seems beneath an institution to throw itself a big birthday party at the local laser tag arena. This is the kind of dilemma we’ve been grappling with for two decades now. 

Originally released in 2002, “Sunglasses at Night” is the song that launched label boss Tiga to singing-DJ superstardom. The electro update of Corey Hart’s switchblade owner’s anthem was nothing short of a phenomenon, thanks in large part to the production wizardry of Zyntherius, aka Jori Hulkkonen, a strong contender for lifetime Turbo MVP. 

So as we look back while looking forward while remaining completely in the present moment, we’ve entrusted a huge part of our history to some of today’s hugest artists. But nothing could be huger than the gratitude we feel toward our longtime fans, those who have been with us since the beginning and who probably know that “Sunglasses at Night” wasn’t even released on Turbo. This is for you.

DIMITRI VEIMAR REMIX
Any avid nowcaster can tell you that electro is back. And there's no better agent of this frequently timeless genre than Russia's Dimitri Veimar. Perhaps the label’s leading light in 2018, Veimar strips “Sunglasses" of all organic sentiment, mocking the inherent nostalgia of the exercise in way that seems needlessly mean-spirited.
