THE NORTHSTAR: My new sounds are like the thunderous vibrations of the duffs of the Bedouins dancing upon sands of time. My ancestral sounds are like shards of the hour glass popping through color-lines with rhymes.

So, I sat down with my husband one night in February 2007 to watch about 2 to 3 hours of the PBS documentary, "Eyes on the Prize". Naturally with February being Black History Month, it almost gives networks the validation that they need to discuss the plight of African people and how we really got here.

Well, some topics came up that I didn't recollect in all of the years of watching this series and situations arose that kept tears streaming down the sides of my face. I sat, I watched, I listened, I wrote. Here is what I thought. Here is what I felt. Enjoy. And may The Creator's Peace, Blessings and Mercy forever be upon us all.

This was a poetry challenge inspired by Sassy Ms. Sharon of Secluded Paradise II for her poetic cohorts to dig deep and find themselves. Fortunately, Amina1389 not only took first place in the challenge, it seems that her pen and her soul swam up stream against the currents of Plasma Rivers to untie some of the obstacles entangling/suffocating her natural essence. Fishing through the memories of some of her favorite things in life, she emerged from the depths of prose; she embarked on a natural path of finding herself with a resounding... WOOSAH!

As self-described “Harlem-Kin to the core,” Amina’s exposure to art and culture began early, and she recalls the impact that her mother’s extensive music collection had on the development of her creative vocabulary, citing Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, and Stevie Wonder as among her most significant artistic influences.  In fact, it was the original and playful lyrics of Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band that inspired Amina to try her hand at songwriting, and the speculative and evocative writings of Kahlil Gibran that initiated her love for poetry. Safiyyah Amina always dreamed of traveling the world. She realized that dream by establishing a full service travel agency; Basai Travel Experience, LLC. 

Consequently, Amina’s professional repertoire has been featured along with the works of gifted and innovative artists such as Tshombe the Poet (aka Truth Theory), Zam Zam & the Mellyomatic, The Nxt Level, and Poetic Sylenz; receiving the critical acclaim of lyrical giants like Miguel Algarin and Amiri Baraka. In addition to her work as a freelance correspondent for a number of radio stations throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, Amina continues to maintain a robust recording and performance schedule, presenting at venues ranging from university campuses and community forums, to appearances at soulful tabernacles like the storied Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar.
