در اساطیر یونان وقتی مینوس، پادشاه کرت، پسرش را در آتن از دست داد به آنها اعلام جنگ کرد و برای خونبها از آتنی‌ها هر 9 سال، 7 مرد جوان و 7 زن جوان قربانی میخواست. قربانی‌ها وارد هزارتویی (Labyrinth) می‌شدند که دیوی نیمه انسان نیمه گاو به نام مینوتور در قلب آن پنهان شده بود. هزارتویی بدون راه برگشت. سال‌ها بعد وقتی تسئوس، پسر پادشاه آتن، داوطلب و راهی هزارتو شد، آریادنه دختر مینوس عاشق او می‌شود. او شمشیر و نخی به تسئوس می‌دهد که بتواند دیو را بکشد و از هزارتو بیرون بیاید.
