Silent Night II

In 2005 Max Leonard Hitchings responded to four ‘non-spaces’ in Exeter, developing a piece of music with lyrics for each site, which they recorded with frequent collaborator David Shewry. A four track CDr was then made available, and audience members were invited to listen to the specific tracks in the corresponding sites. 
The story follows the local Exeter legend of much maligned outcast Robin Redfern through his torment at the hands of local children, his solace in a similarly tormented young boy and the boy’s accidental death, Robin’s persecution as a result of being blamed for it, and ultimately his destruction (by hanging) at the hands of the boy’s father and many enraged townspeople, and the disposal of his body behind a bricked up archway. In this final movement, Robin’s consciousness extends beyond his death, so that he can observe birds and insects entering and leaving his tomb via holes in the wall.

As a NOSE 2014 exclusive, Hitchings has completely reworked the second piece from the album.
