About one in 10 of the Indians, who died in Dubai last year, committed suicide caused by depression and anxiety due to delay in salary payments.
 
The Indian Consulate registered 106 suicide cases last year from the 1157 deaths registered with it, Consul General Venu Rajamony said in a press conference today.
 
“This consulate runs a crisis prevention programme which is aimed at the problems related to suicide, depression and anxiety within the community of Indian workers,” said Rajamony.
 
According to the Consulate General of India in Dubai, upto 65 per cent of the one million Indian nationals living in the Dubai, work in the construction industry.
 
Last year the Consulate received over 1,408 complaints (an increase of 85 per cent as compared to the previous year) mainly relating to the non-payment of salaries, from workers.
