In 2011 Amon Tobin made his MUTEK debut with the world premiere of his massive 3D audiovisual behemoth, ISAM.  The original  25′ × 14′ × 8′ set that he performed in acted as the vehicle for his seventh album of the same name — an experimental and accessible ride through invented instrumentation and synthesis. As a live, generative and reactive audio and visual performance, ISAM was narrative, subtle and bombastic. The project took Tobin around the world for two years, finally wrapping up, fittingly, at MUTEK Mexico in October 2013. We are proud to present the audio recording of this unforgettable performance, for the first time.

“Maisha” is the Swahili word for life.

This album to me expresses the feeling of embracing life in all its forms, with its different perspectives, moods, sounds, energies. In contrast to previous work, which was somewhat more reflective, this album was made with a lot of creative energy and drive. When starting each track I felt like I was overflowing with ideas that I had to try out and get down as soon as possible. Sometimes the inspiration would come from listening to various new albums on Bandcamp from around the world: jazz, African folk, hip-hop, Neo-soul, funk, afrobeat. Other times the inspiration would come simply from biking around Los Angeles and taking in sights and sounds from different parts of the city.

I think there can easily be pressure when making to album for it to feel as though each album has to embody a sophisticated concept or make some specific statement. Albums expressing abstract concepts or political or social statements are important for the musical culture, to be sure; but music is also an expression of where the artist is at spiritually, emotionally, and creatively at a certain point in time. This is what Maisha means for me. It represents the joys, excitements, and bursts of creative feeling, as well as the tranquility and nostalgia that I felt at times while making it. With this work, as with my previous work, I am ever seeking to defy genre. Of course, it’s clear that downtempo and trip-hop music form the backbone of what I am doing, but I am also trying to challenge those labels all the time by exploring different rhythms, scales, arrangements, and instruments.

I hope this album helps you find inspiration to express yourself or explore in whatever ways are possible or speak to you in your life, as it did for me.

Amon Tobin marches to no one’s beat but his own. In a career spanning over ten years he has been connected to but never belonged to a host of scenes and styles. He has consistently made the music he feels he needs to make, not what other people think he ought to make, always exhibiting a level of attention to sonic detail which makes his music more intensely textured, beautiful and brutal than almost anyone’s out there. 

Make no mistake – 'Stunt Rhythms' is about beats and bass. The model for the album comes from “Fools Rhythm” (included here), one of the standout tracks from Ninja’s 20th anniversary 'XX' boxset, an infectious mixture of playground melody, sharp beat and thunderous bass. 

Although Amon’s love of the lower reaches of low end will undoubtedly cause people to reach for lazy comparisons with dubstep, 'Stunt Rhythms' is in fact more accurately viewed as his love letter to hip hop – less the rampant consumerism of, say, G-Unit’s “Stunt 101” than the early culture of innovation and freshness, of showing off simply that you’re better at what you do than anyone else. So while tracks like “Snap” could be said to literally break down classic hip hop to its constituent components and put them back together in completely new shapes, the more uptempo tracks like “Razorback” come on like a whole new soundtrack for an as-yet-uninvented future pop-locking. If you imagine Mantronix as a Kenworth K100 truck, Two Fingers is what happens when the truck turns into Optimus Prime. 

Uncompromising, muscular and powerful, the music of Two Fingers is also full of subtle touches, humour and a supple sense of rhythm. Which, when you think about it, is just showing off.

Out 8th July on limited edition, hand-numbered and signed double 10” vinyl, the “Archipelago Remixes EP” by Hidden Orchestra is a real treat, with reworks from King Britt, DC Breaks, Kelpe and Long Arm providing a fresh spin on tracks from 2012’s hugely acclaimed ‘Archipelago’ album. Highly intricate and beat-heavy, the Hidden Orchestra originals are an adventure playground for any remixer, and the results from this eclectic array of talent are stunning and intriguing in equal measure. 

The DC Breaks Remix of “Vorka” sees the pair of Andy C protégés twisting the ethereal beauty of this track, which originally came out as the second single. Possibly the only drum ‘n’ bass track to feature a hook played on a musical saw? On the flip, King Britt’s Remix of “Vorka” finds the revered DJ and globetrotting musical multi-tasker turning the same original into a slow-burning house cut, with added vocal hooks.

The second 10” opens with Fourth Wall (Kelpe Remix). Slowing the tempo and upping the oddball factor, London based producer Kelpe, whose fans include Huw Stephens (BBC R1) and Tom Ravenscroft (6Music), strips back bandleader Joe Acheson’s dramatically layered composition and rebuilds it with the highly original rhythmic style that has established him as a heavyweight talent. “Reminder” is reworked into a high definition ambient soundscape by Long Arm (Project Mooncircle) whose jazz-influenced style has had major props from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs and Gilles Peterson.

Since its release in late 2012, the ‘Archipelago’ LP has gained heavy press support including Q, Clash, The Independent, BBC Music, The Scotsman, The Line of Best Fit and Wax Poetics. This mesmerising music has also hooked daytime and specialist radio tastemakers alike, with play from Stuart Maconie, Lauren Laverne, Gilles Peterson, Cerys Matthews, Nemone and Huey Morgan on BBC 6Music; as well as Ally McCrae (BBC R1 Introducing), John Kennedy (XFM), Goldierocks (Selector), Late Junction (BBC R3) and Jamie Cullum (BBC R2).
